The Kosciusko Community YMCA in Warsaw notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development on April 22 that it was laying off 300 workers on April 23.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires companies planning mass firings or layoffs to notify local and state officials at least 60 days before the effective date. Because of Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb’s March order to close nonessential businesses, many companies have had to suspend operations without giving the required notice.

The WARN letter from Heidi Moseley, director of human resources at the YMCA, states that, “Due to COVID-19 concerns from our local health department and the subsequent shutdown mandate from the governor, we closed our doors beginning March 19, 2020. We have approximately 300 employees, but only 15 full-time employees. The rest are part-time employees. Under normal circumstances, all of our employees (FT and PT) work about 2,000 hours per week.”

The letter states the YMCA hopes to reopen as soon as possible.

“We may not be running with 100% of our staff right away, but hope that everyone will be back to normal schedule as soon as possible,” the letter states.

In a telephone call Tuesday afternoon, Moseley said there was no further information, but “some essential staff are working.”
