He was born on Jan. 27, 1944, in Floyd County, Ky., to the late Edgar and Eva Adams Smith. He was married on Sept. 12, 1964, to Murline Owens, who preceded him in death on April 2, 2009.
He retired from Zimmer Orthopedics after 40 years in 2000. He was a member of God’s Highway to Heaven Church of Warsaw, where he served as deacon for 15 years. In years prior, he served as adult Sunday school teacher at Gospel Hill Pentecostal Church of God of Silver Lake. He was a classic car enthusiast and enjoyed attending many car shows. Jim also was known as an avid University of Kentucky Basketball and New York Yankees fan.
Survivors include daughters: Penny and husband Charley Bailey, Akron; Tammy and husband Randy Wallen, Claypool; Kimberly and husband Scott Sipple, Warrenton, Va.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters: Joyce Vance, Akron; Janice and husband Gary Howes, Salyersville, Ky.; Sharon Randall, Akron; Lynda and husband Ted Richards, Rochester; Lisa and husband Frank Whitaker, Akron; brothers: Ronnie and wife Linda Smith, Burket; Russell and wife Rita Smith, Akron; Michael and wife Julie Smith, Akron; Keith and wife Sheila Smith, Sidney.
He was preceded in death by parents, Edgar and Eva Smith; wife, Murline Smith; sister, JoAnn Prater; and brothers, Gary and Donald Smith.
Following county, state, federal and CDC guidelines, private family services will be held at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Bob Brown officiating.
Private burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Lake.
