Zimmer Biomet told employees on Tuesday that limited production will begin starting Monday.

According to Monica Kendrick, vice president of external communications for Zimmer Biomet, on April 13 the company reduced operations for two weeks in all North America plants, with only critical manufacturing lines to stay running due to the COVID-19 health emergency.

Kendrick said the limited production to begin in U.S. facilities starting Monday will vary in production volume and vary by site and production line.

“So I cannot provide additional details at this time,” she said.

Workers have been receiving 80% of their wages and retaining all of their accrued paid time-off days during the shutdown.

Workers starting back on the lines Monday will also be required to wear a face mask, Kendrick said. Zimmer will provide team members with a face mask when they arrive at work to wear during their shift, but if employees prefer to bring their own, they can, she said.

Zimmer Biomet, based in Warsaw and founded in 1927, makes orthopedic devices for the medical community and operates in more than 25 countries around the world.

A decline in elective surgeries during COVID-19 resulted in the company shifting their activity to strengthen their financial position.

According to numbers based on preliminary, unaudited financial results, Zimmer Biomet estimates revenue for the first quarter 2020 will be approximately -9.5 to -10.5% on a reported basis. Final results for the first quarter are scheduled to be announced on May 11.

Along with taking action to protect employees, President and CEO Bryan Hanson decided to forgo 100% of his salary.
