George was born Oct. 9, 1924, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to George and Margaret Heesom Sankey. He was united in marriage to Edith Amos of Cumberland on Aug. 31, 1947.
He graduated from Charleston High School in West Virginia in 1943 and enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He proudly served as a navigator on a B-24 Liberator during World War II. He received an Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and three Bronze Stars during the war. Afterward, he continued his education obtaining a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Cincinnati.
He worked as a superintendent in construction and was the vice president of City Asphalt and Paving, Youngtown, Ohio, for 35 years retiring in 1987. He was a longtime active member of the Western Reserve United Methodist Church and was a founding member of the Youngstown Model Railroad Club.
Survivors include children Jeanne (Bruce) Grossnickle, of Sanibel, Fla.; Patricia Sankey, of Australia; Mark (Cim) Sankey, of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by wife, Edith Sankey in September 2004; and a son, Michael (Lynn) Sankey, of Phoenix, Ariz.; in February 2019.
Services will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Green Haven Memorial Gardens, Canfield, Ohio.
All arrangements are entrusted to McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw.
