It “is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities,” said Jeanna Hann, adult department manager and marketing coordinator, North Manchester Public Library.
The first year the week was celebrated was in 1958 after research showed Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments, Hann said. A plan was created in 1957 “on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries.”
“The theme for NLW 2020 has been altered to ‘Find the library at your place’ to focus attention on the digital resources and virtual services libraries offer their communities,” said Robin Fosnaugh, administrative assistant, Warsaw Community Public Library.
National Library Week is celebrated every April, but in 2020 this means library staff and library services have had to investigate and use as many nontraditional means of service as possible, according to a news release from Bell Memorial Public Library in Mentone.
The North Manchester Public Library will celebrate the week by having a Virtual National Library Spirit Week.
“Each day will have a special theme and fun activity for all patrons to participate in, along with the chance to win an awesome NMPL hoodie sweatshirt! We encourage all patrons to get involved via our website (www.nman.lib.in.us) and social media pages (find us on Instagram and Facebook) with each daily challenge. Simply tag the library in your photos to be entered to win!” said Hann.
Events at North Manchester Public Library includes Shelfie Sunday, Mindful Monday, Team Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, Throwback Thursday, #NMPlunderCover Friday and Superhero Saturday.
“The North Manchester Public Library always celebrates National Library Week, but this year is a little different due to the complete virtual aspect,” said Hann, noting this week’s events can be participated in strictly through the library’s website and social media pages.
WCPL, however, will not be celebrating this year.
“With WCPL's closing, our usual celebration of National Library Week is cancelled this year. In past years, we have acknowledged National Library Week with programs, contests, activities and giveaways throughout the week. Each year library staff are recognized on National Library Workers Day for the invaluable service they provide to our community,” said Fosnaugh, noting patrons can still use the library’s eResources at warsawlibrary.org.
The staff at Bell Memorial have and will continue to investigate and innovate in order to serve the Mentone community, according to the release from the library.
“The library’s ‘Creative Corner’ craft program has moved online with crafts that can be done with little or no need for many, if any, necessity of purchasing anything. For little ones, there is a craft involving toilet paper tubes, as well as free packets for creating their own COVID-19 time capsule (packets are available at the library at the main entry).
“For teens, there is a project for a graffiti signature/tag (via a computer) and we have a link for decorating terra cotta flower pots for when spring finally gets here,” the release states.
