Red Cross Offering Virtual Training Beginning Monday

The American Red Cross Indiana Region is offering virtual training for volunteers interested in disaster response amid COVID-19.

Duchess Adjei, media relations for the Red Cross Indiana Region, said the virtual learning classes are a shift from their usual in-person training.

“It’s really important for us to get as many people trained as we can,” she said. “I think it’s important that we have members of communities responding to disasters in their communities. This is about Hoosiers helping each other and stepping up during this time, and I think that’s really important. With everything that we’re going through with COVID-19, it’s a fight we’re all trying to work through.”

The classes start on Monday and interested individuals can register at www.surveymonkey.com/r/LearningARC.

The classes will be offered through Zoom virtual meetings.

A volunteer who goes through Red Cross training becomes a certified American Red Cross disaster worker, Adjei said.

“It’s really good, because when we think of these very large-scale disasters, the hurricane, we often see people, very rightfully so, wanting to pour in to help and deploy, and typically we’ve learned over the years of these very complex disasters that have a lot of parts and pieces to them that it’s really important to have the training before they deploy,” she said.

When a disaster strikes, the Red Cross will send a blast email out to the trained volunteers in their database, Adjei said, offering ways they can help with specific needs for which the person is trained.

The training is free. A person can also pick and choose if they want to register and get trained in all of the topics or certain ones that interest them or their skill set.

“Disasters don’t stop,” Adjei said. “We still need people to respond to disasters in their community whether it be that home fire, a tornado or a flood.”

Here is the list of dates and times and topics being offered:

• Disaster Basics: An Orientation, Monday, 10 to 11:30 a.m.

• “Zero to Hero”: Begin a Trainee, Finish a Responder, Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Mass Care: An Overview, April 27, 9:30 to 10 a.m.

• Shelter Fundamentals, April 27, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• Feeding Fundamentals, April 28, 1 to 4 p.m.

• Distribution of Emergency Supplies Fundamentals, April 29, 1 to 4 p.m.

• Disaster Assessment Part I: Conducting Detailed Damage Assessments, May 4-6, take at your own pace.

• Disaster Assessment Part II: Map Meet-Up, May 7, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The American Red Cross responds to approximately 64,000 disasters a year.
