Travis Davidson, owner of Davidson Auto Deals, 600 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, created a Facebook group called North Central Indiana Adopt a Senior 2020.
“Let’s all shower our 2020 seniors with some extra love. Adopt a senior or 2 or 5! ... Send a letter, card, gift, gift card, snack, anything to warm their hearts and remind them we’re all rooting for them. It’s a sad time with cancelled proms and graduations cancelled or postponed. Let’s spread some love!” the description about the group stated on its page.
In this group, a parent puts a senior’s picture on the site with a little bit about them. An area resident then goes and adopts them and makes sure that senior gets some sort of recognition for graduating, whether it’s flowers or a gift card, etc.
“One post per graduate. Start your post with ‘Not Adopted,’ then share a few things about your senior and post a few pics. Once your senior is adopted, edit your post to remove ‘not adopted.’ Feel free to adopt any senior whether or not they’ve been adopted. There are no limits for adopting,” the Facebook group description stated.
“It’s sort of a matchmaking type of page,” he said.
Davidson started the group about 5 p.m. Wednesday, and as of Thursday afternoon, he said it already has about 440 members and at least 200 seniors posted to the group.
It initially started off celebrating seniors in Kosciusko, Wabash, Elkhart and Noble counties, but has expanded to include north central Indiana as people have asked to be part of it. He said he got someone Thursday morning from Marshall County calling about it.
“I didn’t expect it (to be this successful), to be quite honest,” he said.
Currently, he said school corporations from roughly seven or eight counties are represented in the Facebook group. Once a school corporation is represented in the group, its logo is added to the page.
Davidson said the point of the Facebook group is to give the seniors some sort of recognition. Some of these students won’t get a graduation ceremony due to the coronavirus pandemic. Graduating seniors are currently being surrounded by the coronavirus, he said, so Davidson wanted the seniors and the community to be able to focus on something else and to have seniors feel like someone is paying attention to them.
Davidson said he usually does some sort of promotion for Wawasee students, but that was sort of hard to do this year because of the coronavirus. When asked if he was planning on doing something similar next year, he said, “I’m assuming we’ll do something next year, considering how much it’s taken off in the past 24 hours.”
