James Richard Nichols, age 74, of Warsaw, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2020, at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw of the COVID-19 virus.

Jim was born in Norfolk, Va., May 21, 1945, to Melvin and Dorothy Grice Nichols. The family settled in Gasport, N.Y. Jim graduated from Royalton-Hartland Central School District, Middleport, N.Y., in 1963. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1965 and served four years in the Army Security Agency.

On Aug. 30, 1969, he married his partner for life, Pamela, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Middleport, N.Y. In 1979, he completed his bachelor’s degree at Cedarville College in Ohio. The family moved to Winona Lake and then to their beloved lake home in the Country Club neighborhood in 1987. Last summer, they celebrated their 50th anniversary with their whole family in Olcott Beach, N.Y., on Lake Ontario. Jim was delighted to share his Niagara Frontier home turf with his grandsons, Matthew and David.

Jim retired from RR Donnelley in 2010 after 31 years of service. Jim loved living at the lake, watching the birds, the weather and the moon. His favorite time of day was “the hour of the blue snow/water” at twilight. He enjoyed getting together with his good friends and solving the problems of the world, annual trips with Pam to the French Quarter in New Orleans, as well as reading voraciously and studying history.

He is survived by his wife, Pam; sons, Tyler (Christy) and Braden; and two grandsons. Surviving siblings are Donna, Steve, Joyce and Janice.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date.
