When: Friday, 7 p.m., Foreman Field, Goshen.
Series (last 35 years): Warsaw, 22-13.
JohnHarrell.net’s prediction: Warsaw, 38-14.
Last meeting: Sept. 21, 2018, Warsaw, 35-0.
Last time Goshen won: Sept. 21, 2007, 28-27 (3OT).
About Warsaw: The 6A Indiana Football Coaches No. 12/Associated Press No. 13-ranked Tigers topped visiting Northridge 28-13 in Week 5 … Juan Jaramillo (147 carries for 766 yards and seven TDs), Wyatt Amiss (40 carries for 218 yards and two TDs) and Blake Marsh (24 carries for 199 yards and one TD) lead Warsaw in rushing while Amiss (11-of-24 for 203 yards and three TDs) is the top passer and Luke Adamiec (eight catches for 162 yards and one TD) the leading receiver … Parker Davenport (35.5), Gage Lyon (23), Zach DeFord (17.5) and Marsh (15.5) pace the Tigers in total tackles. Adamiec has intercepted two passes.
About Goshen: Coach Kyle Park’s RedHawks are coming off a 45-0 home loss to Concord … Bryant Grewe (48 carries for 149 yards and two TDs) and Drew Worthman (34 carries for 117 yards and one TD) lead Goshen in rushing while Colin Turner (44-of-109 for 410 yards) is the top passer and Wesley Van Hooser (11 catches for 89 yards) the leading receiver … Isaac Sawatsky (38), James Troyer (33) and Roman Schrock (33) pace the RedHawks in total tackles.
Warsaw coach Bart Curtis:
On Goshen — “On paper, they’ve struggled a little bit. Anytime anybody’s playing us, they’re going to play their best and we’re expect nothing but that.”
State rankings — “The only rankings that concern me are the ones on Thanksgiving weekend. But, on the flip side of that, they are good for the program as long as we take them for what they are. It’s nice to see people other than people in (our) community recognizing what we’re trying to accomplish … They’re for the fans. The guys that are actually coaching the team, they know who they really are in each program … We can control how we practice, who with practice with and our preparation for Warsaw to continue playing football.”
On the Northridge game — “We put three pretty good quarters together last week after a miserable first quarter … Putting the ball on the ground two times in first quarter and having it result in scores is a little more than a hiccup, that’s an ulcer … We’ve got to take care of the football. We had three fumbles ourselves and recovered one of them. (Northridge) had five and recovered every one of them … The ball won’t be knocked loose if you have five points of leverage including the off hand. Ball security is part of the game like blocking and tackling. It is a skill and we obviously need to do a better job of teaching ball security.”
Whitko (0-5 overall, 0-4 TRC) at Tippecanoe Valley (4-1, 4-0)
When: Friday, 7 p.m, Death Valley.
Series: Valley leads 27-19.
Last meeting: Valley won 48-14, Sept. 14, 2018.
Last Whitko win: 44-20, Sept. 16, 2016.
Harrell’s prediction: Valley, 35-14.
About Whitko: The Wildcats jumped to a 7-0 lead in last week’s 53-22 loss against North Miami and trailed just 19-14 late in the second quarter, continuing a trend of being competitive in first halves, but were unable to sustain it, finishing with 10 turnovers. … Sophomore Cade Berg rushed for 70 yards on 12 carries against the Warriors. He’s at 236 yards and a 4.8 average on the season. Ashton Schuh was responsible for all four of his team’s receptions, good for 71 yards. Mason Lehman paced the Whitko defense with eight tackles, including a sack.
About Valley: The Vikings roared back from a 14-0 halftime deficit during their 34-14 road win over Rochester in a showdown of TRC unbeatens last week. With the game deadlocked 14-all at 10:27 to go, linebacker Jacob Eherenman recovered a Zebra fumble at the Valley 1, setting the stage for a go-ahead, 99-yard touchdown drive. … A fifth straight victory Friday would mark the Vikings’ best streak since winning six in a row in 2012. … Dakota Gaff leads a potent Valley rushing attack with 405 yards and a 7.8 average. Jaydin Conley’s at 376 and 5.4, and quarterback Tanner Trippiedi 217 and 5.9. That trio has combined for 11 rushing TDs. … Jalen Potter owns 19 of the Vikings’ 24 receptions for 207 yards and two scores. … Defensively, Valley’s paced by Gaff with 47 tackles overall and Harry Johnston with five for loss. The Vikings have registered a dozen takeaways to stand plus-five as a team.
Whitko coach Phil Jensen:
On last week — “Any time you take the ball and start a game up 7-nothing after the first possession, you can’t draw it up better, but we gotta finish. A couple well-meaning people came up afterwards. One thought maybe we were overconfident. I don’t see that. Another said we look like we’re waiting for something bad to happen. Well, if you do that, something bad will happen. Frankly, you can’t win any football game when you turn it over 10 times. I don’t ever remember having 10 turnovers in a game. The good thing is, those mistakes are fixable, and we’ve got good kids. They’re trying. We’ll keep coaching them the best we can and shuffle the deck til we find what works.”
On Valley — “They had quite a second-half comeback (against Rochester). They’re big and physical and like to play old-school ball. Trippiedi’s been quarterbacking them for a while. He’s good. If you load up too much (for the run), he can make you pay for it.”
Valley coach Steve Moriarty:
On last week’s second half — “It just seemed like everybody was doing their job and contributing. We got off the line well, the blockers were making great blocks, the backs were hitting the holes hard. Seemed like the first time in a long time we had everything come together that well for a half. We had some adjustments that worked. We widened our splits (along the offensive line), and then Jacob (Eherenman at fullback) did a great job blocking their middle linebacker.”
On being a perceived big favorite — “That makes me fearful, and it’s also going to be homecoming, so there will be a lot of distractions. The kids can’t take (Whitko) lightly. They need to keep their eye on the prize. They want to be conference champs, so you have to play week-by-week. (Whitko’s) kids are always playing hard. We saw that when we went through film. They have a lot of heart and fight, and Coach Jensen’s done a great job getting them back to being competitive.”
Manchester (1-4 overall, 1-3 TRC) at Southwood (5-0, 4-0)

It was Manchester’s first OT game since a 13-12 win over Whitko 11 years ago, and the highest-scoring game the Squires have been involved in since a 58-43 loss to Tippecanoe Valley in 2013. … Devin Marcum passed for five touchdowns and 233 yards against the Norsemen, with two of the scores going to Thane Creager — his first two catches of the season — and two more to Kreeden Krull. Previously regular QB Logan Barley slid over last week to make four catches for 58 yards and a score in a 41-0 win at Wabash. … Gabe Lloyd leads a deep rushing attack with 296 yards, a 4.7 average and six TDs. … The Knights’ defense has racked up 15 takeaways, including four interceptions by Dawson Filip and three each by Carson Rich and Connor Rich. We got a big kickoff return for a score from Tyce Rooney to cut it to 14-7 and that kind of energized us. From that point, it was back and forth. We had an interception right before half in the red zone, which we can’t have, but then we come back in the second half and take a lead. We scored first in overtime, but missed our extra point. They made theirs and that was it.”
On kicker Klayton Hendrix — “He’s human, and it shouldn’t have come down to an extra point. He had a huge game. The job he did at placing the ball on kickoffs was huge throughout the game, and then the extra points, he made them all but one. He’s a good one (15-of-17 on the season on extra points). Even the best miss sometimes.”
On Southwood — “They’ve played deep into the playoffs the past few years and every program wants to get to that point, because those extra three or four weeks of practice pay off in the long run. They're about 50-50 pass and run, and have some athletes. Defensively, they're pretty aggressive. They're 4-2-5 just like we are, and they're spread just like we are. They have their tweaks, but their look will be (familiar). We've really worked on correcting our mistakes and taking care of us, so I think we'll be ready Friday night."
