Warsaw Overcomes Early Deficit In Win Over Raiders

By Chip Davenport-

The Warsaw Tigers led 21-13 over  Northridge, starting a drive at their own 49-yard line with 5:00 left in the fourth quarter. On the fourth play of the drive Keagan Larsh ran a blazing 34 yards to pay dirt on a counter play, putting the Tigers ahead for what proved to be a 28-13 Northern Lakes Conference win at Fisher Field Friday night.

Larsh wasn’t ready to party, though.

“Before I even thought of celebrating, I was looking around for flags, “The senior running back said. “I didn’t see any, so then I let it go.”

It’s hard ot blame Larsh for his reaction; he had four touchdown runs called back on penalties in the season’s first five games this season including an 80-yard touchdown called back late in the second quarter of last night’s contest.

The Tigers, down 13-0 at the time of the holding call, re-set at their own 33-yard line. Sophomore Julius Jones eventually found the end zone on a similar counter run, a 37-yard touchdown on that drive. The Tigers scored 28 unanswered points before the teams shook hands when time expired.

The Tigers similarly erased a 14-0 Raider lead in last year’s tilt in Middlebury to vanquish the Raiders 37-14. Some folks might use the malapropism, “déjà vu all over again” to describe this year. Tiger head coach Bart Curtis provided his own take of last night’s Tiger win.

“I’d call it ‘we didn’t hang onto the football very well in the first half’ type of game.”

Northridge jumped to its lead Friday when the Tigers fumbled on their first two drives. Raider running back Cade Lacey scored on five- and 14-yard touchdown runs, respectively, at the 2:58 and 1:11 marks in the first quarter.

“We did not succumb when things went poorly,” Curtis said. “We scored when we were finally able to hang onto the football.

“The exchange before half, the interception by Aaron Greene, and having a touchdown called off the board, and still coming down and punching one in and going up 14-13 at the half was really huge. It was eerily similar to last year’s game.”

The score giving the Tigers in the lead for good was a 18-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Amiss to sophomore split end Jackson Dawson.

Dawson covered offensive duties for injured junior Luke Adamiec.

Greene stepped up at cornerback for Adamiec this week. He snared an interception on a Jett Gott fade pass to the left corner of the end zone to stop the Raiders on their third march toward the end zone.

“I think they were going after (the other side) a few times. When they decided to come after me, they thought I would be off guard, but I was prepared for a pass my way,” Greene said.

The other junior cornerback, Caden Silveus also picked off an Oliver Eveler pass with 49 seconds left in the contest; his second in three games.

The Tiger defense also settled down after the two Northridge scores. Tiger linebackers and defensive linemen were hurrying Raider passers as well as making clean contact on heavy pressure. Junior lineman Zeke Reed stepped in for one play to spell Andres Adame and sacked Eveler. The crucial tackle would be the catalyst in preventing the Raiders form reversing their second-half misfortunes.

The Tigers had strong performances form a handful of players who haven’t had much playing time this year.

“One thing we always try to stress with our staff is you always want to coach next year’s team this year but don’t forget about this year’s team,” Curtis said. “In situations like this you find out how well your ‘2s’ have been coached. We were fortunate that we had kids who have not been getting a lot of playing time who were still able to step in and play well for us.”

The Tigers (4-1, 2-1 NLC) travel to Foreman Field next Friday for a clash with Goshen. The Raiders (3-2, 1-2) host NorthWood.
