Kosciusko County Retired Teachers

Kosciusko County Retired Teachers met Sept. 10 for lunch, a business meeting and a “Scam” program. Jill Beehler called the meeting to order. New members Peggy Burgher and Brenda Arnold were welcomed.

Information was shared about the IRTA Foundation Programs. Scholarships applications are due in April for college juniors and seniors majoring in education. A Hand-Up grant reaches out to retired teachers with monetary needs. Active teacher grants help fund a teaching idea for the classroom due in September and awarded in October. Applications are online at kcrteachers.org

The “Scam” program was presented by Det. Ryan E. Coble from the Warsaw Police Department. He is the public information officer, as well as a member of the detective division. He stated that scammers can clone your friend list from your devices and private messages; they often start conversations with sweepstakes and awards. Red flags are when they ask for gift cards, wire transfers or Western Union upfront. Listen for their sentence structure, accents or when they imply you have warrants or bonds outstanding. Coble recommended to stay away from Snap Chat.  Also, he indicated Googling the phone number yields poor information most of the time.

Door prizes were won by Ann Chubb, Marcia Randolph, Deloris Roberts and Sharon Whetstone.

The group’s final meeting of the year will be Oct. 8.  All retired teachers are invited.
