“At approximately 1:30 p.m., officials at Warsaw Community Schools received notification of a potential safety concern at Warsaw Community High School,” a press release from WCS said.
“A questionable statement was made,” said Dr. David Hoffert, superintendent of Warsaw Community Schools, although he wouldn’t give further details. He did not say if the questionable state ment was made by a student.
Following school safety protocols, a precautionary lock-in was initiated to allow administrators and police to conduct an investigation.
The lock-in status allows classroom activities to continue as planned.
Hoffert said the Warsaw Police Department was at the school quickly and determined the threat was not credible within a couple of minutes.
Hoffert said school officials did not think the threat was credible, but initiated the lock-in procedure as a safety precaution.
Hoffert said a lock-in means that classes go on as normal, but the school doesn’t allow outside visitors into the school. If a student has an appointment or something similar, the student will be allowed to leave the school, but the school does try to limit the number of people coming in and out of the school in question.
“A lock-in, as we did, is just a precautionary first step,” Hoffert said. “Things like this are good practice to make sure all of our protocols are in place to make sure everything is in good working order in case of an emergency.”
Activities and parent pickup were planned to continue as scheduled, according to the press release.
“As a reminder, any false reports or threats will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” the press release stated.
Hoffert stated he believes the police will continue their investigation.
The Warsaw Police Department did not respond to a request for information by press time.
