On offensive line play — “The line (from left to right, Austin Meads, Kyle Miller, Brock Hueber, Jacob Desenberg, Angel Mendez and Griffin Reed) has played admirably. They’re coming off the ball understanding angles and where defenders are going to be after the ball is snapped … There’s a pretty good chance we’ll use the flexbone this week.”

On the Elkhart Memorial game — “No lead is safe. We’ve got to cover better and take care of the little things like footwork and attention to detail. We took a step forward defending their running plays.”

About Culver: Coach Mike Zehner’s visiting Cavaliers blew out West Central 44-0 last week … Quarterback Tucker Fisher, running backs Jalen King and Carter Stevens and fullback Zac Ditmire among Culver’s offensive threats.

Per Triton coach Rodney Younis:

On the Cavaliers —
“Culver is a good team. They give you some tough match-ups. They’ve got a big offensive line and big running backs. They run smash-mouth football at you. It will be important to read our keys and not get caught with our eyes in the backfield looking at the running backs … It’s going to important for us to try to get them off the field. When we’re on offense, we need to take advantage and capitalize. If we give the ball up, they could keep it for eight minutes on us.”

Areas of improvement — “Our communication has been good. It’s so important to get some continuity going. This will be the first game all season we’ve started the same group of offensive linemen (Kreft, Jeremiah Farrell, Travis McCoy, Trace Schuh and Cameron Shively) … Our passing game has been good. Last week, the running game started coming together at little bit.”

On Bremen game — “We started off passive. We were down three scores right away. Then we started to play football. We finished off the game strong.”

Tippecanoe Valley (3-1 overall, 3-0 TRC) at Rochester (3-1, 3-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m, Barnhart Field.

Series: Valley leads 24-19.

Valley coach Steve Moriarty:

On last week —
“I felt we left a lot on the table, but that’s a good team we played. (Tristan) Working’s a heck of an athlete, so stopping him was critical in our win. We did a good job in the first half of containing him, but he had a lot on the ground in the second half. Still, I was proud of our defense for holding them to seven points on the night. Offensively, we had over 200 yards on the ground, but we still have a lot to clean up.”

On areas to clean up — “A big one is sustaining blocks. Sometimes we’re just chipping at the shoulder, and we need to clean up our tackling and make sure we completely wrap up.”

On Rochester — “Their backfield is very strong. Abbott, with his lead blocking and his running, he’s just a wrecking ball, and he does a good job at middle linebacker as well. They’re 3 and 1 against some good competition. Their only loss is to Knox (34-27) and Knox is ranked (10th) in 3A.”

North Miami (2-2 overall, 1-2 TRC) at Whitko (0-4, 0-3)

He’s also Whitko’s top receiver with 14 catches for 169 yards and two TDs.

Whitko coach Phil Jensen:

On last week —
“Yeah, it was rough, but it wasn’t that rough until the second half. We have our moments, then whatever happens at halftime, it falls apart. Plus Maconaquah is really good.”

On contrasting halves — (Whitko’s been tied in one game at halftime, down seven in another and never down more than 15, but has been outscored 69-6 in second halves) “Every game we’ve been within a score or two at the half, but we can’t close the deal. We get in our own way. A lot of that comes from you gotta get the first one so you can believe in yourself more than we do right now.”

On North Miami — “Coach (Bob) Bridge is a defensive coordinator who’s been around forever and does a good job. Offensively, they spread the ball around. It’s a completely different style from what we saw last week. They do play a lot of kids both ways, like we do.”

Northfield (0-4 overall, 0-3 TRC) at Manchester (1-3, 1-2)

When: Friday, 7 p.m, Burk Field.

Series: Manchester leads 38-18.

Last meeting: Northfield won 42-21, Sept. 14, 2018.

Last Manchester win: 23-20, Oct. 18, 2013.

Harrell’s prediction: Northfield, 28-24.

He’s also his team’s leading ground gainer at 170 yards. … Sophomore free safety Clayton Tomlinson has made three of Northfield’s five picks.

Manchester coach Greg Miller:

On last week —
“It was a frustrating game, one we let slip away. In the first half, we cut it to 7-6 and missed our extra point. Then they come out the second half and score, make it 14-6, but we’re still feeling pretty good. Then we kind of catch fire on Seth’s big play (an 84-yard TD reception). Then our next drive we get inside the 5, but can’t punch it in (being stopped on downs with 3:36 left). We don’t fault the effort, but the execution could’ve been better. Everybody, coaches and players, feels like we wish we could have that one back.”

On Northfield — “Any time you face a team that hasn’t won a game, it’s a little scary. They’re a good team. They run triple option. They’ve run it since Coach (Brandon) Baker has been there (seven years) and run it well. Three or four guys on every play can carry the ball. Their lines are aggressive off the ball and it’s the same guys on both sides. They get off low and hard. By no means are we taking that 0-and-4 lightly. They’re well-coached, tough and their record’s a little skewed by who they’ve played (teams that are a combined 12-4).”

On Gaerte’s performance — “He was injured a couple weeks, but he’s back, he’s an athlete and he’s a big part of what we want to do offensively, in the run and pass game. He was big on yards after the catch.”

Jerson Sanchez is 13-of-14 in kicking extra points … Jake Lone (33), Jason Borkholder (26) and Newcomer (22) paces the team in total tackles.

Wawasee coach Jon Reutebuch:

Injuries — “We added one more to the list (two-way starters Justin Castro, Ethan Hardy, Jesse Landeros and Gabe Moore and defensive starters Dante Landeros and Nathan Larson will be out this week). Castro is out for the season. In grades 10-12, we’re dressing below 40 players.”

On Concord game — “As the game went along it was evident we were short too many guys.”
