Triton’s offense ran wild over Caston’s defense with a balanced scoring attack led by seniors Connor Pitney (two passing touchdowns to senior D’Angelo Shumpert), Hunter McIntyre (two rushing touchdowns) and Koby Mast (two rushing touchdowns).
The Trojan defense also stepped up, stymying the Comet offense all evening; Triton allowed Caston only one possession where they retained the ball for more than five downs.
Triton scored their first points under four minutes into the game on a 27-yard TD pass by Pitney to Shumpert. Although Pitney threw an interception on the first play of their next drive, senior Quentin Amsden returned the favor by picking off an errant throw by Caston quarterback Landon Shafer, one of two the freshman threw in the game. Triton took advantage of the interception with a 6-yard touchdown run by McIntyre
On their next drive, Mast scored on a 6-yard run. The next Trojan drive resulted in Pitney losing a fumble, but the defense forced Caston into a four-and-out. Triton capped off their subsequent drives with a 74-yard passing score from Pitney to Shumpert and a 15-yard rushing score from McIntyre. Mast scored the Trojan’s final touchdown of the game on his second rushing touchdown with 6:06 to go in the third.
Barring his interception and fumble, Pitney “did a great job in the passing game,” said head coach Rodney Younis.
“D’Angelo had a great game receiving, McIntyre had a great game rushing and really all the receivers did a great job blocking downfield, which opened up a lot for our running game,” Younis continued. “We were really balanced on both offense and defense; a lot really came together this game. The defense did everything we asked and were intense the whole game. We had to make a lot of O-line adjustments this week, but they kept the running game flowing well.”
Although they had no difficulty scoring touchdowns in this matchup, scoring afterwards was an issue for Triton, with an extra point blocked and two failed two-point conversions.
“We’re going to focus on improving our blocking and executing this week,” Younis added.
The win gives Triton a 2-1 record, and evens its HNAC record at 1-1. The Trojans host county rival Bremen Friday.
