By Staff Report-

Local Boy Scouts are looking to raise $1 million for a new endowment fund that will support Scouting in the community.

The Lincolnway District Boy Scouts of America held its Scouting Heritage Breakfast at the Crazy Egg Café in Warsaw Thursday, according to a provided news release. Scout Executive John Gliot and District Executive Clayton Whistler said Scouting is still strong and vibrant in Kosciusko and Whitley counties, with 39 Troops, Packs and Crews active in the Lincolnway District.

The meeting recognized the legacy of Scouting left by community members like Hobart Creighton, Wally Miller, Flip Phillips, Larry Castaldi and Neal Carlson, as well as Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters like Jim Doyle, Jim Bowers, Jim Ritter and Tom List.

Kosciusko County Community Foundation CEO Suzie Light announced that a new endowment fund was established at KCCF to support Scouting in the community. None of the dollars in the fund will ever be spent, but the annual earnings of the fund will be spent to secure the services of a district executive. The district executive will be a full-time professional Scouter who will organize new Scouting groups and keep existing troops active and healthy, the release states.

The goal is to raise $1 million for the fund.

At the meeting, retired Kosciusko District Executive Jim Molebash told the story of organizing the Scout Troop in Milford and how one of the Scouts in that Troop used the skills he learned in Scouting to save a life.

“I feel like I have a part in saving that boy’s life. I started the Troop,” Molebash said. “But it’s not important that it was me. What’s important is that there is a full-grown man walking around today who owes his life to the fact that there was a Boy Scout in Milford, Indiana, and a district executive there to start the Troop.”

He continued, “This is why I’m so passionate about this endowment project. There must always be a district executive here to ensure the health and strength of Scouting in our community.”

Breakfast attendees were invited to request more information about the endowment fund by contacting the Anthony Wayne Area Council, BSA, 8315 W. Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne, IN 46804, or by calling 260-432-9593.

Foundations or corporations which might want to support the fund also are invited to contact the Anthony Wayne Area Council.

Members of the Lincolnway Scouting Endowment Committee are Bruce Andrews, Eddie Creighton, Dick Dobbins, Scott Fox, Ken Locke and Molebash.
