Warsaw’s Kissling Advances To XC State Finals

NEW CARLISLE - In a survive and advance situation, Warsaw junior Jacob Kissling did just that.

After claiming sectional and regional titles the previous two weeks, as did Warsaw’s boys and girls cross country teams, Kissling finished 16th in Saturday’s cross country semistate at New Prairie High School. His time of 16:31 allowed him to advance individually to the state finals, which will be held Saturday at the LaVerne Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

Twenty boys teams and 20 girls teams competed Saturday, as well as 10 individuals from each of the four regionals that fed into New Prairie.

The top six teams, as well as the top 10 individuals not on an advancing team, qualified for the state finals.

Kissling was the only local individual to advance from the 5K at New Prairie.

Warsaw’s boys team finished ninth with 213 points, missing the cut by 18 points.

The Lady Tigers finished eighth with 212 points, 23 points away from advancing.

The Manchester Lady Squires were 20th with 455 points.

After Kissling, Warsaw’s other four scoring runners in the boys race finished in a pack separated by 18 seconds, but those finishes ranged from 49th to 77th out of 178 participants.

Junior Tanner Stiver was 49th in a time of 17:05, followed in that pack by teammates Sam Lechlitner (56th), Fernando Niebbia (64th) and Harrison Phipps (77th).

Lukas Nier (82nd) and Austin Fleming (117th) rounded out Warsaw’s seven-man lineup.

Crown Point won boys team title with 93 points and will be joined at state by Chesterton (107), Valparaiso (112), West Lafayette (140), Harrison (165) and Lake Central (195).

New Prairie (195), Lowell (212), Warsaw (213) and LaPorte (221) rounded out the top 10.

Manchester junior Carter Bedke (37th), Tippecanoe Valley junior Matthew Howes (94th) and Triton senior Russell Reichard (147th) competed as individuals but did not advance.

In the girls 5K race, Warsaw sophomore Ava Knight was the top area finisher in a 21st-place time of 19:28.

Other scoring runners for the Lady Tigers included sophomore Wini Barnett (35th), freshman Erika Bugg (51st), junior Adree Beckham (69th) and sophomore Regan Brouwer (77th).

Sophomores Macelyn Marcuccilli (128th) and Amanda Lucinde (151st) rounded out Warsaw’s lineup.

Freshman Josie Briner led Manchester with a 63rd-place time of 20:31, while sophomore teammate Kambree Cashdollar was 93rd in 20:58.

No other runner for the Lady Squires finished in the top 100 of the 177-person race.

New Haven Semistate

Wawasee’s Karlson Hand and Michael Hammer competed in the New Haven Semistate Saturday. Hand finished 67th in 17:01, and Hammer was 80th in 17:11.
