Great Weekend Propels Manchester Women's Golf To Best HCAC Finish In Years

Leading the charge this weekend for the Spartans was Taylor Erfman. Erfman was named to the All-HCAC Team after finishing in a tie for seventh place. Taylor shot round scores of 88 on Saturday and 84 on Sunday for a two-day total of 172.
Mary McGuire placed tied-for-12th this weekend at the conference championships following rounds of 89 and 86. She carded a two-day total of 175.
Kaitlyn Cook added a 16th-place finish for MU this weekend. Cook fired rounds of 85 and 92 for a two-day score of 179.
Sara Knepper finished in a tie for 23rd-place at the HCAC Championships following a two-day total of 182. Kendra Davis rounded out the Manchester scoring with a 39th-place finish and a score of 215.
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won the HCAC title this weekend with a two-day team total of 660. The Fightin' Engineers will advance to the NCAA Division III Championships in May.
Transylvania University placed second over the weekend, finishing with a score of 699. The Spartans (706) finished two strokes ahead both Hanover and Franklin, who tied for fourth-place with identical scores of 708.
Manchester Topped By HCAC-Leading Mt. St. Joseph
NORTH MANCHESTER – Manchester University welcomed back its alumni for the 2019 Homecoming football game at historic Burt Field on Saturday.
Following a special groundbreaking ceremony for its new athletic stadium, which will be completed in June 2020, held earlier in the morning, the Spartans battled the HCAC-leading Lions of Mount St. Joseph on the gridiron.
After shutting the Lions out through one quarter of play, MSJ's offense became difficult to slow the remainder of Saturday's contest as the Spartans fell by a final score of 47-14.
The Lions tallied a burst of scores just before the half, finding the end zone three times during a three-minute stretch that gave the visitors a 26-0 edge at the intermission.
Manchester scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half, scoring once in the third quarter and once again in the fourth quarter.
Manchester's first TD came on an 18-yard trick-play pass from Brian Antoine to Harrington Greer. MU's other score came on a 5-yard run courtesy of Donavan Henderson, Jr. Henderson provided the bulk of Manchester's offense, carrying the ball 30 times for 171 yards. Henderson averaged 5.7 yards a carry and his longest rush of the day went for 41 yards. Donavan crossed the 3,000 yard rushing threshold and is just 115 yards shy of breaking MU's all-time rushing record.
Michael Cross led the Spartans with 11 tackles. Devontay Moore finished with eight tackles and sack.
For the Lions, Chaiten Tomlin, the HCAC-leader in passing yards and touchdowns, threw for 390 yards and five touchdowns, bringing his season TD total to 23. Tomlin connected with Cornell Beachem for a 90-yard TD strike in the third quarter. Beachem finished with 284 yards of total offense and four scores (3 receiving, 1 rushing).
Sean Sullivan returned an interception for a touchdown for Mount St. Joseph.
Mount St. Joseph improved to 5-0, 3-0 HCAC this season. The Lions still maintain a half-game lead over Hanover for first-place in the conference standings. The Spartans now sit at 1-4, 0-2 HCAC this fall. Manchester University will be on the road next weekend, traveling to Franklin College on Saturday. Kickoff against the Grizzlies is set for 1:30 p.m.
Men's Soccer Stopped At Transylvania
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The host Transylvania Pioneers edged the Manchester Spartans 2-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday.
Manchester and Transylvania remained deadlocked at zero through the entire first half. The Pioneers struck first in the 61st minute following a Manchester own goal. Five minutes later, Garrett Dean scored his third goal of the season to put TU ahead 2-0.
Transylvania's defense limited Manchester's scoring opportunities as the Pioneers held a 12-9 advantage in shots. Ruben Gonzalez and Nick Surber (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) led MU with two shots a piece.
Justin Winterboer made six saves in goal for the Spartans.
Saturday's loss was the first conference setback for the Spartans. Manchester stands 5-7-1, 2-1 HCAC this year. The Pioneers improved to 6-5, 3-0 HCAC in 2019. Manchester will return home on Wednesday to face Franklin College. Kickoff against the Grizzlies is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Good Field.
