Marsh Scores 3 TDs In Warsaw’s Senior Night Win

The Warsaw Tigers celebrated Senior Night with a great defensive effort and a three-touchdown night by senior Blake Marsh to defeat NorthWood 35-14 in a soggy, cold Northern Lakes Conference football game Friday night.

The Panthers started off with four consecutive runs, gaining 24 yards between senior Jaden Miller and junior Nate Newcomer. Then, on second and one, senior Ben Mestach received a shovel pass from Newcomer, exploding past the Tiger defense for a 56-yard score.

Warsaw nearly countered on their subsequent drive, with senior quarterback Wyatt Amiss breaking out for a 54-yard run on their way to the red zone. However, Amiss was picked off in the endzone by Newcomer, bringing Warsaw’s drive to a halt.

On their next drive, NorthWood was forced to punt, the ball landing at the 7-yard line. The Tigers then pushed the ball down 93 yards down the field, topped off by a 56-yard run by Marsh for his first touchdown of the night.

Warsaw nearly recovered an onside kick after Marsh’s touchdown but couldn’t get a handle on the wet ball as it slipped out of bounds.

With time ticking down in the first half, Warsaw was the beneficiary of a pass interference call that placed the ball at the 27-yard line, giving University of Missouri-bound kicker Harrison Mevis a shot at giving the Tigers a lead heading into the second half. The kick just missed and the teams entered the half tied at seven.

The Warsaw offense wasted no time in taking the lead in the second half. On the first drive of the third quarter, Warsaw junior Juan Jaramillo scored his twelfth touchdown of the year on a four-yard score. Less than two minutes later, after forcing a quick punt, the Tigers scored on Marsh’s second touchdown of the game, a 49-yard run.

At the onset of the fourth quarter, the Warsaw defense continued its strong game when senior Gage Lyon intercepted the ball near midfield.  Blake Marsh then scored his third touchdown on a 24-yard run.

Not satisfied to kick off and let NorthWood have a shot at bridging the gap, Warsaw performed an exact recreation of their previous unsuccessful onside kick – but this time fruitfully. The Tigers recovered the ball at the 38-yard line, giving them great field position for Amiss to score and push the lead to 28.

NorthWood scored with just over three minutes to go on a touchdown run by Newcomer, but it was too little too late as the Tigers took the win 35-14.

“NorthWood is a great team,” said a visibly-excited Warsaw head coach Bart Curtis. “They’re fast and physical and well-coached. A quality team all around. Tonight, we came out and acted interested – which we don’t always do – and it showed.

“It didn’t start the way we wanted, but we played a great second half. The seniors, especially, played hard tonight and it paid off.”

Curtis was especially proud of the Warsaw defense, which stymied a tremendous Northwood offense that had been averaging 35 points per game heading into the night.

The Tigers (7-1, 5-1 NLC) will travel to Concord (7-1, 5-1 NLC) in their regular season finale. Warsaw holds slim hopes of a Northern Lakes Conference title, as they are currently trailing Plymouth (7-1, 6-0 NLC). Warsaw needs a win at Concord and Plymouth to fall to visiting NorthWood next week.
