Per Coach Bart Curtis:

On NorthWood –
“Fast. Aggressive. Physical. For us to compete and be where we want to meet, we have got to match their energy, intensity and physicality. They’re a well-coached team … Everything goes through the quarterback … Our defense needs to just play. Sometimes we get mesmerized and analytical instead of playing the game of football and enjoying it. We’ve got to play the next play. When you react and play, you can play fast.”

Offensive line – “They’ve improved. It helps that you have six seniors in that group (center Brock Hueber, guards Jacob Desenberg and Griffin Reed and tackles Austin Meads, Angel Mendez and Kyle Miller). They have really progressed over the course of the season.”

Wawasee game – “We’ve got to be more opportunistic. We have to get off the field when the other team has the ball … Wawasee came out guns-a-blazing with 14 plays and scored a touchdown.”

Tippecanoe Valley (5-2 overall, 5-1 TRC) at Manchester (2-5, 2-4)

When:
Friday, 7 p.m, Burk Field.

Series: Valley leads 38-7.

Last meeting: Valley won 46-25, Sept. 21, 2018.

Last Manchester win: 27-20, Sept. 6, 2014.

Harrell’s prediction: Valley, 31-17.

About Valley: The Vikings are coming off a 24-3 loss at Maconaquah that dropped them into a second-place tie in the TRC with the Braves. Southwood leads the league at 6-0, but Valley remains in control of its own destiny in terms of at least tying for the title given that the Vikings host the Knights in two weeks to close the regular season. … Domingo Santiago’s field goal accounted for Valley’s lone points against Maconaquah and improved him to 3-of-4 on the season. Jalen Potter made his fifth interception for the Vikings, who have recorded nine as a team. … Dakota Gaff and Jaydin Conley were stymied against the Braves’ defense (nine combined carries, 15 yards), but remain Valley’s leading ground gainers with combined figures of 907 yards, a 6.2 average and nine touchdowns. Tanner Trippiedi rushed for 48 yards and passed for a season-high 163 at Maconaquah, but was just 7-of-22 and was picked off a season-hgh twice. … The Vikings have won seven straight regular-season home games.

About Manchester: The Squires blanked Whitko 14-0 last week for their first shutout in 63 games, the last one being a 35-0 whipping of North Miami on Sept. 20, 2013. … Running backs Sam Martindale and Braxton Ream have combined for 578 yards, a 4.7 average and nine touchdowns. … Quarterback Devin Marcum is 67-of-135 for 1,102 yards with eight TDs and eight interceptions. … Sophomore receiver Seth Gaerte has caught 18 passes for 323 yards (a 17.9 average) and two scores over the last four weeks with no fewer than four receptions in any of those four games. … Ream and fellow sophomore Dylan Stroud lead the Manchester defense with 61 and 55 tackles, respectively. The Squires have recorded 10 takeaways, eight by fumble recovery.

Valley coach Steve Moriarty:

On last week -
“Five turnovers. That dictated the game. We had a couple chances to get within seven in the third quarter, but we had turnovers. I thought the defense played well enough to win, but we have some things offensively to work out, (including) holding on to the ball.”

On the Squires - “Manchester got that shutout, and has a heck of an offense, too. It can be hard to slow them down. They make you work by spreading you out. They’re about equal run-pass, so you’ve got to be prepared. We’ll have to play sound football to win.”

On the conference race - “If we can win these next two games, we’ll be co-champs. Friday’s loss stung, but it didn’t take away our goal of a conference championship.”

Manchester coach Greg Miller:

On last week -
“When you win that turnover battle, good things happen. I thought defensively, we played extremely well. I’m not sure what the stats were, but we held their passing game down. They did get some yards on the ground, but they were tough yards. I thought our guys maintained the gaps and flew to the ball. Offensively, we scored enough to win, but also dropped some passes, missed some blocking assignments. I thought special teams were a big difference maker. We pinned them back on some punts (junior Albin Lederhilger had three boots for a 40.0 average with one inside the 20).”

On Valley - “It’s another big, physical team. Defensively, they’re very aggressive. Offensively, the quarterback’s a big concern. He throws well and runs well, gets a lot of yards scrambling. They have a hard-nosed running game. We’ll have to play similar to last week defensively, trying to create turnovers and filling the gaps. We’ll have to try to match their physicality off the bat.”

On Seth Gaerte - “He got dinged up, missed a couple games early in the year, but has come back blazing. He’s an athlete who you want to get the ball to. We’ve got a few, and only one football, but he’s definitely somebody who it’s imperative that we get him some opportunities, be it catching or running. When he gets those, it loosens up the defense.”

Elkhart Memorial (1-6, 1-4 in NLC) at Wawasee (1-6, 0-5)

When:
Friday, 7 p.m., Warrior Field, Syracuse.

Series: Wawasee, 11-7.

Last time Wawasee won: Oct. 6, 2017, 7-6.

About Wawasee: The Warriors lost 42-18 at Warsaw last week … Wawasee is led in rushing by Parker Young (75 carries for 161 yards and four TDs) and Levi Brown (38 carries for 157 yards), passing by Young (59-of-149 for 705 yards and three TDs) and receiving by Ethan Garza (25 catches for 303 yards) and Kameron Salazar (16 catches for 137 yards and one TD) … Robert Schmucker (59), Nathan Larson (53) and Austin Baker (32) paces the team in total tackles.

Per Coach Jon Reutebuch:

On Elkhart Memorial – “
They’re very athletic. I’m sure they are as hungry for a win as we are … We’re going to have to keep them away from the big play.”

Improved area – “The offensive line (sophomore Driedyn Hernandez at center, senior Jackson Templin and sophomore Logan Mast at guards, senior Austin Lajoice and sophomore Quintin Spitzmacher at tackles) is finally starting to come together, doing a good job protecting and starting to create some holes. That’s allowed our quarterback (Young) to grow a little bit. He did a nice job of managing the game for us (against Warsaw) and (running back) Levi Brown had a good game. He ran very hard.”

Warsaw game – “We’re still fighting. We’re still trying to get better. We still have a passion to try to win.”

Triton (2-5, 1-4 in Hoosier North Conference) at Knox (6-1, 4-1)

About Knox: Coach John Hendryx’s Class 3A AP No. 8/IFCA No. 10-ranked team lost 12-7 to Pioneer last week … Zac Rose threw a touchdown pass to Reece Keeton for the lone Knox score against the state-ranked Panthers.

Per Coach Rodney Younis:

On Knox –
“Knox is a complete team. Their offense, defense and special teams is solid … They’ve got good numbers, size and speed. They look good on film.”

Improvement – “Our offensive line is slowly jelling together after a few weeks of working together … If we can merge (our passing game) with our running game, I feel offensively we could be pretty solid.”

On the North Judson game – “Defensively, we made a big step forward. The defense played very physical and played assignment football.”

Whitko (0-7 overall, 0-6 TRC) at Northfield (3-4, 3-3)

When:
Friday, 7 p.m, Dawes Field, Wabash.

Series: Whitko leads 31-11.

Last meeting: Northfield won 31-8, Oct. 5, 2018.

Last Whitko win: 19-7, Oct. 9, 2015.

Harrell’s prediction: Northfield, 35-17.

About Whitko: The Wildcats were shut out for the second straight game and third time on the season in last week’s 14-0 loss against Manchester. Whitko committed four turnovers inside the Squire 24 … Sophomore Cade Berg rushed for 141 yards on 16 carries for the Wildcats, while Ashton Schuh made three catches for 46 yards. … Sophomore Grayson Ulshafer is possibly out for the season with a broken foot. As of Tuesday, Nick Meadows, who also missed last week, and Dom Moseley were questionable to play Friday due to injuries.

About Northfield: The lately potent Norsemen, who started the season 0-4, won their third straight game last week, a 40-21 victory at Rochester. … Northfield has racked up 143 points during its winning streak, its second-best three-game output in at least the last 36 years. … Double threat Levi Fulkerson has rushed for 466 yards, a 5.3 average and six touchdowns to go with 53-of-112 through the air for 745 yards and seven TDs against just three picks. He has fumbled 13 times, however, losing five. … Junior running back Jarret Shafer has averaged 81.5 yards rushing per game over the last four weeks with five touchdowns and a 6.2 norm per carry. … Defensively for the Norsemen, end/tackle Braden Ripplinger has eight of his team’s 43 tackles for loss, while junior DB Clayton Tomlinson has made four of the team’s nine interceptions.

Whitko coach Phil Jensen:

On last week —
“We fumbled on (Manchester’s) 7, fumbled on their 1, fumbled on their 13 and threw an interception from their 23 into the end zone. That’s four turnovers going in, and you lose 14-nothing. You can’t have four turnovers. The kids played hard, but we just keep shooting ourselves in the foot.”

On Northfield — “They run the option and it poses a lot of problems. They’ve obviously had success lately. When you run it and get people out of position, you’ll make them pay. We’ve gotta tackle and we’ve gotta block well. Physically, I think we match up well. We have about the same number of kids, and they play a few more both ways than we do, depending on injuries.”

On best thing going — “We keep showing up for work, the kids and the coaches. Nobody’s quitting. If you don’t quit, you have a chance. If you quit, you don’t have a chance. But that’s life, and football emulates life. … We just gotta keep going to work. I know the kids want it to be fixed, and I think they know we want it to be fixed. We just gotta keep working.”
