No. 19 Warsaw Girls Soccer Rolls In Sectional Opener

In the opening round of the IHSAA girls soccer sectional, the host Lady Tigers got a goal from junior Gracie Scholl in the ninth minute of the 80-minute match, only to see Wayne sophomore Myshell Hurse tie things up a minute later.
It was all Lady Tigers after that, however, as they cruised to a 7-1 win and advanced to Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. sectional semifinal against Fort Wayne South Side.
Tenth-ranked Homestead, the defending sectional champion, will face Huntington North in Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. semifinal.
The championship game is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday.
“They’ve got a lot of speed up top. They did a good job of not sitting down after that first score,” Warsaw coach Jon Hoover said of Wayne.
“I praise them for not sitting down out of that ... it was a good finish. She made a good, hard cut and our defender slip, and she buried it.
“It was a quality goal, and we were a little complacent, and (Hurse) is a really fast player. She was a handful all night. I’m proud of our team. We weren’t very clean tonight, but we scored when we needed to, and I thought we finished the ball pretty well tonight.”
The Lady Tigers, now 10-5-2 on the season, led 3-1 at halftime as junior Audrey Grimm scored in the 16th min, and senior Abby Steffensmeier netted a goal in the 25th minute.
Steffensmeier, whose goal in the waning seconds against Northridge last week helped Warsaw secure a share of the Northern Lakes Conference championship, scored in the 49th minute to push the Lady Tigers’ advantage to 4-1.
Other second-half goals came from sophomore Corissa Koontz (penalty kick 59th minute), freshman Rylee Burns (62nd minute) and sophomore Tes Berelsman (65th minute).
Despite the lopsided victory, Hoover felt his squad was a little flat Tuesday.
“We came out a little flat tonight,” said Hoover. “We came out a little slower than we would have liked to. I don’t think we moved the ball fast enough. At times, we were hitting the right people, but we weren’t doing it fast enough to ultimately get where we wanted to go with our possession.
“It was one of those things where we were coming off a really big game (against Northridge). Fort Wayne Wayne is a little bit different paced team, they played a little different game than a Northridge, just the style and everything like that.
“It took a little adjusting. We didn’t come out as good as I would have liked to in the first 10 minutes, but once we got in the flow of things it worked out OK.”
Wayne finished its season with a record of 9-7.
