SYRACUSE — Triton took the basketball inside the paint on a regular. basis and helped the visiting Trojans beat Wawasee 40-35 Saturday night in non-conference girls high school basketball at the Hardwood Teepee.

“Our girls were finally more aggressive going at the basket,” said Triton coach Adam Heckaman after the 125th victory of his coaching career and the Trojans moved to 2-5 for 2019-20. “I’ve been on my post players a lot after these first couple of weeks of games about being bigger, stronger and wanting to score.

“Our guards go it to them. (Juniors) Abbey (Viers) and Lexia (Hostrawser) were dominant down there (under the basket) to start the game. When you establish that, it opens up things for our guards to drive in there and we hit some jump shots.” Senior Whytnie Miller celebrated her 18th birthday with a game-high 14 points for Triton.

“We missed her last year,” said Heckaman of Miller, who has missed much of the past two seasons with knee injuries. “She’s a leader, our composure, our calming force out there. She doesn’t get too worked up about anything.” Hostrawser added 10 and freshman Kinsey Atkins for a team that scored 40 in a season-opening loss at John Glenn then never topped 31 in the next five outings.

The Trojans took a 34-33 lead on a Hostrawser basket with 5:05 to go and never trailed the rest of the way. The visitors’ biggest lead was 40-33 thanks to a rebound basket by Hostrawser with 2:50 remaining.

The Warriors committed 14 turnovers while shooting 2-of-14 from the floor in the final two quarters.

“The second half, we finally did what we needed to do defensively to hold them down,” said Heckaman.

“I give Triton a lot of credit,” said Wawasee coach Matt Carpenter.

“(Heckaman’s) girls are very disciplined. They play well together.

They were able to get the ball inside and they were able to crash the offensive boards, get put-backs and get us in foul trouble.

“They created a lot of problems for us tonight and they deserved to win the basketball game.

“The flip side is we didn’t play near what we’re capable of. We saw us playing 80 to 90% in the communication realms, the anticipation and the positioning defensively of where we’re supposed to be. Because of that, our execution suffered.” The Warrior attack was led by sophomore Emily Haines with seven points. Sophomores Jada Carter and Becca Smith tallied six apiece.

The score was tied at 26-all at halftime.

Miller netted eight points for Triton and Haines produced five for Wawasee (3-2) in the second quarter.

The Trojans sank 3-of-8 floor shots and the Warriors 5-of-11 in the second period.

The biggest differential in the first half was four points when Wawasee went ahead 24-20 on a steal and layup by Hannah Lancaster at the 4:28 mark.

Triton led 15-13 at the close of the first quarter.

Hostrawser scored six points and sophomore Taren Yates tallied four for the Trojans in the opening period.

It was Miller’s layup with 15 seconds left in the first quarter that put Triton ahead 15-13.

The Trojans made 7-of-13 shots from the floor while the Warriors connected on 4-of-10.

Three different Wawasee players — Carter, sophomore Kennedy White and junior Abby Steiner —  scored three points in the first quarter.

Triton visits NorthWood and Wawasee goes to Fairfield (girls/boys doubleheader), both Tuesday, Nov. 26.

In junior varsity action Saturday, Wawasee topped Triton 25-13. Ava Harker (13 points) paced the JV Warriors (4-1). Dylanie Miller (4) led the JV Trojans (2-5).
