KLA Cadets Learn About Philanthropy

Suzie Light, executive director of the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, presented on the foundation’s role in facilitating giving in the county. Suzie explained that individuals have time, talent and treasure to give.
The foundation assists individuals in setting up endowments, grants and scholarships. They also help connect individuals to organizations they would be a good fit for.
Rich Haddad, CEO of the K21 Health Foundation, shared K21’s mission. The organization works to support health initiatives and projects in the county. Over the last 20 years the K21 Health Foundation has granted out over $50 million. Past projects have included the K21 Health Pavilion, the K21 Splash Pad in Winona lake and others.
Peggy Michel, vice president of wealth management at Lake City Bank, explained how setting up disability planning, health care power of attorney and a living will can help prepare for the future. Through estate planning, individuals can protect financial assets and leave a lasting legacy.
At the next session on Dec. 3, the KLA cadets will learn about the orthopedic industry at the Orthopedic and Advanced Manufacturing Training Center at Ivy Tech Community College.
The Kosciusko Leadership Academy is in its 37th year of continuous service to the county. As an independent 501(c)3 organization, KLA conducts bi-weekly morning sessions around the county to expose leaders to a wide variety of local topics and experts.
