A makeup day for Warsaw will be announced later.
Over 17 other school districts throughout the state also will be participating, with more announcing their participation as the date nears.
“The statewide Call to Action for education in Indianapolis is advocating for significant increases to the state budget for education, a hold harmless on teacher evaluation for the 2018-19 ILEARN results and repeal of the externship requirement for teacher licensure,” a release from the Warsaw Community Education Association states.
A news release from Warsaw Community Schools states that over 20% of certified teachers within WCS requested personal days to take part in the Call to Action. The requests exceeded the number of substitutes available to “ensure proper safety and security within WCS schools,” the release states.
A release from Whitko Schools Superintendent Dr. Brandon Penrod states, “We have a significant number of our teachers requesting personal days to attend a ‘Red for Ed’ Action Day at the statehouse on Tuesday. At the time of this announcement, almost one-third of our teachers will be absent on Nov. 19. With this information, and in order to allow our families time to plan accordingly, Whitko Community Schools will close on Nov. 19, 2019. We do not have enough substitute teachers to ensure a safe environment, let alone a productive instructional day.”
It states that school will be in session Feb. 17 to make up for the loss of instruction on Tuesday.
Warsaw Schools has reached out to Baker Youth Club and YMCA, who intend to provide special youth club options for Tuesday. Parents should contact those organizations for more information.
The WCEA news release states WCEA is an independent association representing the certified teachers within WCS and that while WCEA is not affiliated with state and national labor organizations, it does support the statewide goals of the Call to Action as the local representatives of teachers.
