Miller, a U.S. Army veteran, served from 1985 to 1999, including in Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to his biography prepared and read by County Veterans Affairs Officer Rich Maron.
Miller was born Dec. 1, 1965, in Columbia City, to Lloyd D. and Barbara Sue Miller.
At an early age, his father’s work caused the family to move back and forth from Arizona to Indiana.
Miller joined the U.S. Army in 1985 at 19 years old. He took basic training and advanced infantry training at Ft. McClellan, Ala., where he trained to become a member of the military police.
After completion of training, Miller was assigned to the 978th Military Police Co., where he remained until 1998.
He married his wife, Stacey, in February 1986. Shortly after, Miller received orders in May 1986 for Muenster Army Base in Dieburg, Germany, where he spent the next four years.
Miller became part of the NATO Physical Security Force.
His next assignment brought him back to the United States at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, where he served his country for the next eight years, including a temporary first assignment to South Korea.
Miller was honorably discharged from the Army in 1999, and he moved back to Warsaw where he would become a member of the National Guard Armory 315.
His Guard unit would be called into action for Operation Iraqi Freedom and go to Kuwait and Iraq.
He also served with his 293rd Guard unit in a humanitarian effort to help with the cleanup after Hurricane Katrina.
Miller retired in 2006 and has since resided in Warsaw.
He and his wife have two children, including Timothy (and wife Melissa), who are stationed at Ft. Bragg. He and his son were the first father-son combination to be stationed together in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their daughter, Chandler Leigh Miller, just graduated with a bachelor’s in business and resides in Warsaw.
William and Stacey have two grandchildren, Asher and Aubrey.
