Argos Presses Its Way To Victory Over Triton

By Mark Howe-

BOURBON – Both Argos and host Triton struggled mightily shooting from the floor in the first half. The difference in the game was, eventually, the Lady Dragon full court pressure forced Triton turnovers, which Argos converted into easy baskets in its 42-22 non-conference girls basketball win Tuesday night in the The Trench.

Lady Trojan sophomore guard Taren Yates picked up her second foul a little more than four minutes into the game, and sat out the rest of the first half. Argos took advantage of her absence, pressing its way to a 14-6 lead at intermission.

Midway through the third period Yates went on a personal 7-0 run over three minutes to close within three with a minute and a half to go in the third quarter.

But Triton had only two more buckets the rest of the way, the last one coming with 13 ticks left on the clock and the game well out of reach.

Officially, Triton was charged with 23 turnovers, all as a result of pressure defense, and it seemed like a higher number.

Despite all the turnovers and shooting just 18% from the floor in the first half, Triton had a shot to win. The Lady Trojans held the visitors to only 24% shooting in the first half.

But the Lady Dragons either got a fast break or ran a spread offense, and either way scored a bunch of layups. They shot at a 55% clip after halftime.

Triton head coach Adam Heckaman wasn’t unhappy with his team’s defense, but was exceptionally frustrated with how his team handled its business when it had the ball in their hands.

“It was still close when we got it to 21-18 in the third quarter, and honestly, we forgot what we did to break (the press) and let ‘em go on another big run,” Heckaman said.

“Even in the first half when we couldn’t do anything (offensively), we were still in it; we were down eight at half.

“Defensively, we did a great job. I told the girls ‘when we can play defense, we do all right. But when we turn it over and we can’t play defense, and they’re shooting a lay-up, you’re hurting yourself.’ And that’s what we did all night.

“When the other team scores 10, 12 points off uncontested layups, you don’t give yourself much of a chance. And no better than what we’re shooting the ball right now, we have to get stops.

“It’s something we have to keep working on. We worked on it Saturday and we worked on it Monday, and I didn’t do my job and work on it enough, so we’ll work on it and get ready for Friday night.

Only six Lady Dragons played, and all six scored, with Kagnie Hoffman getting nine points, four others getting seven each and Madi Vanderweele scoring five.

Yates had a game-high 12 points for Triton, with senior Whytnie Miller adding six for the Lady Trojans.

Argos won the junior varsity contest 24-19. Dylanie Miller led Triton with seven points.

Triton (1-2) hosts South Central (Union Mills, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
