Third-year Warsaw girls basketball coach Lenny Krebs vowed to turn Brielle Harrison loose.

The 5-foot-11 senior took the green light and delivered Saturday against Norwell, leading the Lady Tigers to a season-opening 65-60 win with 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

The Bethel University recruit was 6 of 11 from the field overall, 3 of 4 at the free throw line and made the only three-pointer she attempted.

“I thought Brielle was huge,” said Krebs. “We were joking with her the other day, because we do a lot of shooting drills in practice at times, and she’s never one of those kids we’ve allowed to step back and shoot threes.

“We finally said, ‘you know what, we’re gonna turn you loose.’ It’s her senior year, let’s start preparing her for that next level. She’s going to have to be a dual threat inside, outside. And when she knocked that three down from the courner (in the first quarter) that’s when she became a real threat, because now with her quickness and her ability to get to the rim she’s a tough, tough matchup,”

Seven Lady Tigers scored in the game, with six of them scoring at least seven points.

“Sophomore Kacilyn Krebs chipped in with 13 points, while senior Kaylee Patton added 10 points and six assists.

Sophomore Abby Sanner tallied nine points, while junior guards Kendall Wayne and Kensie Ryman finished with eight and seven points, respectively.

Sophomore Ballie Stephens rounded out Warsaw’s offense with two points.

Norwell got a game-high 25 points from junior Kaylee Fuelling.

Junior Maiah Shelton scored 12 points in the loss, while senior Breann Barger chipped in with nine points.

Warsaw never trailed in the game, though Norwell multiple times from double-digit deficits.

After the game was tied 2-2, the Lady Tigers went on an 11-0 run, only to see Norwell close the gap to 15-10 by the end of the first quarter.

Warsaw built a 63-50 lead late in the final frame, but saw Norwell cut the lead to 64-50 and outscore the hosts 10-2 down the stretch.

“I think the big thing we did well today was we moved on to the next play,” said Krebs. “You saw last year we had a lot of youth, we would hang our heads, you could see our shoulders slump.

“That’s a lot of what we talked about, being able to move on to the next play, and we’re preaching that the entire time … next play, next play, the last one’s over.

“I thought we did a great job tonight of moving past that, the exception would be the last two minutes where we got in a panic mode. We have to do a better job of closing out a game, a 13-point lead and all of a sudden a 7-0 run. That’s something we can’t allow to happen against any team on our schedule. But the fact we were able to take a 13-2 lead, let them close the gap, and build that back up, I was proud of our fight tonight. I thought we showed some feistiness. I’m just proud of this group and how hard we played.”

With the five-point varsity win, the Lady Tigers avoided being swept.

Norwell won Saturday’s freshman game 32-26 and the junior varsity game 41-33.

Warsaw hosts Manchester Wednesday, and then travels to Tippecanoe Valley Saturday in a game that was originally schedule for Friday but moved because the Tigers are playing in the football regional Friday night in Merrillville.
