Winona Literary Club Meets

The Winona Literary Club met Wednesday at the Robin Hood Community Center with 20 members and one guest.  The group welcomed one new member, Pauline Becknell.

Paula Ibach gave a history of the club.  It began back in the late 1890's when H. H. Myers came up with the idea of having a club to liven up the winters in Winona Lake while all the Bible conference people were gone and there was nothing to do.  She recruited 15 members. By 1908, the club joined the Federated Women's Clubs with 55 members.  The club grew and still survives to enrich the lives of women today.

Phyllis Borkholder gave a book review  by Janice Kaplan entitled “Gratitude Diaries.”  She challenged the group with the importance of living a life of gratitude. She backed up this with studies which showed a healthier lifestyle and longer life.

The meeting ended with a time of singing prepared by Norma Roose at the piano.  Her daughter-in-law, Melinda Roose, led the group  in World War I songs - most of which are still remembered.
