By Staff Report-
After over a week of searching, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputies located a 16-year-old girl Wednesday who had removed her Community Corrections ankle bracelet and was listed as a runaway.
Officers attempted to apprehend her since May 21 after she removed the ankle bracelet. Wednesday night, police received a tip the juvenile was at a location on North Majestic Way and that she was in possession of narcotics and a firearm.
Officers from several agencies responded and were initially unable to find the vehicle, as it had left the residence. A short time later, dispatch received a call that the vehicle had returned. Syracuse Police Department officers saw the vehicle, at which point the female drove away,, initiating a vehicle pursuit, according to a press release.
The girl drove the car through several yards and traveled east on Hatchery Road at a high rate of speed. She was unable to navigate the curve in front of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement District 1 headquarters, and the car hit three wooden pillars, a NIPSCO utility pole and a telephone junction box.
The teenager was taken into custody, double-lock handcuffed behind her back and placed into a KCSO patrol vehicle. While she was in the patrol vehicle, she was able to twist and manipulate a hand out of her handcuffs, maneuver into the driver’s seat of the patrol vehicle, turn the vehicle around and then accelerated at a high rate of speed west on Hatchery Road.
The patrol vehicle hit a fence and storage building in the 90-degree curve at the west end of Hatchery Road. The girl fled the patrol vehicle and entered a home on the property of the storage units. The occupant of the home informed officers she heard the crash and stepped outside. During the time that the occupant was outside, the suspect forced open a window, crawled into the home, took a cellphone and then fled through another window.
Officers were able to apprehend the teen without further incident south of the residence.
Turkey Creek Fire Territory responded to the crash and evaluated the suspect before she was released to deputies and transported to the Thomas N. Frederick Juvenile Justice Center in South Bend, per Kosciusko County Probation Department.
A subsequent search of the girl’s car revealed paraphernalia with methamphetamine and marijuana.
KCSO was assisted by the Syracuse and North Webster police departments, Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement, Turkey Creek Fire Territory and Kosciusko County Probation.
