Squires Fall One Win Short Of 2A Baseball Sectional Title
By Alaister McFarren-
Wabash’s tight defense, which backed junior pitcher Trenton Daughtry as he threw a complete-game shutout, limited Manchester to four hits over seven innings. Manchester’s defense was also exemplary overall, shutting out the Apaches in all but the four-run fourth inning.
Manchester nearly scored in the top of the fourth after their first two hits of the contest on back-to-back singles by seniors Mason Meyer and Mason Roberts. Then, with runners at second and third, Daughtry stopped a bullet up the middle with a run-saving layout before throwing the batter out at first.
In the bottom of the inning, Wabash’s Robert Irgang doubled to right with one out and quickly scored on an RBI single by Kallen Kellsheimer. After an infield single and a hit batter, sophomore Bryant Boggs laid down a perfectly executed suicide squeeze with the bases loaded to score another run.
A passed ball by Manchester senior pitcher Sam Martindale, who also threw a complete game, gave Wabash a 3-0 lead. Their final run was scored on an RBI single by junior James Booth.
Manchester tired to take advantage of its last chance, putting a man on first. With one out, junior Korbin Hensley hit a line drive directly at the Wabash first baseman, which was caught and the runner tagged out for a game-ending double play.
“It’s tough to lose a tight defensive game like that,” said Jack Rupley, Man-chester’s head coach.“It stings, especially for the seniors. We’re losing six great seniors this year; each one of them worked hard and hustled all year long, and that’s all you can ask for. This whole team gave their all this season.”
The Squires are losing seniors Meyer, Roberts, Kyle Shepherd, Grant Strobel, Kam Lester and Jacob Slavkin to graduation.
“For some of these guys, this game will be their last ‘fun’ extracurricular,” continued Rupley, “because at the next level, baseball turns into a job.”
Manchester finished the season at 15-11.
