Baseball Sectional, Boys Golf Recaps From Saturday

SYRACUSE – After Wawasee rallied with a five-run fifth inning to take an 8-6 lead, Angola scored once in the bottom of the fifth and a pair in the bottom of the seventh to win 9-8 in the semifinals of the 3A Wawasee baseball sectional Saturday.
Kam Salazar had a double among his three hits, and Carter Woody hit a home run for Wawasee. Levi Brown doubled, singled and scored twice, and Austin Baker scored twice.
Angola went on to take the sectional title, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh to beat NorthWood 4-2 on Monday.
Wawasee finished with a record of 14-11.
Panthers Down Vikings
SYRACUSE – NorthWood scored in every inning it came to the plate, except in the first inning, and went on to an 8-1 win over Tippecanoe Valley in the second semifinal of the 3A Wawasee baseball sectional Saturday.
The Vikings were held to two hits; singles by Tanner Trippiedi, who scored on Wes Melanson’s single in the sixth inning.
Valley finished 2019 with a 11-10-2 record.
Whitko Falls to Squires
WABASH – Evan Wilson had two hits, and Zak neer and Cade Berg had one hit each for Whitko in its 10-0, five-inning loss to Manchester in the semifinals of the 2A Wabash Sectional Saturday.
Thane Creager had a triple, a single and score twice for the Squires. Mason Meyer had a double and a single, driving in a run and scoring a run. Kam Lester scored three runs, and Mason Roberts had a pair of RBI’s. Grant Strobel had two hits and scored twice, and Devin Marcum had two hits, scored once and drove in a run for Manchester.
Meyer was the winning pitcher, needed 63 pitches to get through five innings, striking out two and walking two.

Whitko finished the season 1-17.
GOLF: Triton Invitational
PLYMOUTH – Several area teams competed in Saturday’s Triton Invitational at Pretty Lake Golf Club in Plymouth.
Triton’s first team was eighth at 353. Beau Hepler paced the Trojans with an 84. Cole McKinney had an 87, Chase Butler was at 90, John Gardner was at 92 and Carter Kuntz at 93.
Warsaw finished 11th with a team score of 358. Jack Yeager had an 83, and Ben Brander an 85 for the Tigers. Other scores for Warsaw were Seth Hildebrand, 90; Jeremy Ryman, 100 ; and Mason Whitaker, 107.
Wawasee was 12th at 363. Warrior scores were Evan Dippon, 86; Zach Leedy, 88; Tyler Bosstick, 89; Caden Welty, 94; Brandon Tayagua, 95; and Dillon Drake, 99.
Triton’s second team was 16th at 388. Scores for the Trojans were Gavin Butler, 92; Brock Watkins, 96; Connor Large, 100; Kaden Atkins, 100; Bruce Johnson, 104; and Breylon Wareham, 104.
Whitko was 18th with a team score of 423. Kylar Bryant was at 92, Dale Reiff at 99, Jonathan Strayer at 107 and Storm Baldridge at 125.
Fort Wayne Canterbury won with a team score of 320. Brian Behrens of Zionsville won medalist honors on the first playoff hole over Carroll’s Ben Rudolph. Each shot 77 in regulation.
Triton plays in the Leo Invitational at Noble Hawk in Kendallville today.
Manchester 2nd At Wabash
WABASH – Manchester Boys golf team finished second with a 330 in the Wabash Invitational held at Honeywell Golf Course on Saturday morning.
Logansport won the event with a team score of 319.
Lewis Cass finished third at 356, Wabash fourth with a 364, Southwood fifth with a 369, Tippecanoe Valley next at 379 and Blackford finished with a 413.
It took a four hole playoff to determine the individual medalist between Harley and Owen Kruschwitz, both shooting one over par 72’s on the day. Harley and Owen traded par for par on the first three playoff holes (alternating between holes number 1 and 18), with Harley narrowly missing birdie putts on all three holes and Owen making very nice recoveries for par on each of the holes.
On the fourth playoff hole, number 18, Owen had the edge, but Harley made his birdie putt from approximately 30 feet, while Owen barely missed birdie from about 12 feet.
Scores for Valley were not available as of press time.
Manchester and Valley both travel to Rozella Ford Golf Club in Warsaw for sectional competition at 8 a.m. Friday.
Tigers 8th At Lafayette Jeff
Warsaw’s boys varsity golf team finished in middle of the pack with an eighth place score of 329 in a Lafayette Jefferson Invitational field that had several state ranked teams.
The Tigers were led by freshman Callen Hoskins firing a 76 on the Par 72 Battle Ground Golf Course. Following was Chase Byron’s 82, Tucker Carlile’s 83 and Lewis Turley’s 88. Zach LaLonde completed the Tiger team at the event.
Guerin Catholic, ranked second in the state won the event with a team 304.
Warsaw will now prepare for the IHSAA sectional they host Friday morning at Rozella Ford Golf Club.
