The weather reflected the mood of Lady Tigers track and field fans and parents Tuesday as Mishawaka secured first place at the Warsaw Regional in a 77-point victory.

Penn claimed second place, leaving Warsaw the bronze. Warsaw had won the meet seven years in a row prior to their third place finish. Wawasee finished eighth with 26 points while Triton came in 19th with 12.

The Tigers’ confidence was shaken early. After what appeared to be a third place finish in the 4x800 relay, the team of Ava Knight, Ashlynn Hepler, Wini Barnett, and Remi Beckham was disqualified due to an ineligible athlete.

The Lady Tigers dominated the event at Sectionals, winning by nearly twelve full seconds. The Tiger blunder allowed Wawasee to claim third place. The team of Bailey Mayhew, Nadia Palacios, Cameron Kryder, and McKenzie Smith clinched a trip to the State Finals by posting a time of 10:21.88.

The Tigers made the most of their field events, with two jumpers qualifying for state. Junior high jumper Grayson Kilburn claimed second place with a height of 5’2. Senior Caitlin Kehler finished second in the pole vault, reaching. The only runner to advance was freshman Wini Barnett, who came in third place in the 3200 with a time of 11:26.62.

Several Tigers came inches away from qualifying for state. Senior sprinter Makayla Clampitt came .06 seconds away from third place in the 100. Her time of 13.04 was edged by Mishawaka Marion’s Carlondrea Petty. Freshman hurdler Marin Hart finished fourth in the 100 hurdles at 16.20 seconds. She was also beat by just .06 seconds, this time by Columbia City’s Mariah Schaefer.

Wawasee’s Jada Parzygnot provided the Warriors with over half their points. Parzygnot won the pole vault with a height of 11’2 and finished fifth in the long jump, providing fifteen of her team’s 26 points in the process. She will look to make her mark in the state finals.

Triton’s Abigail Powell excelled in the 300 hurdles, finishing in second with a 47.01 second time. First year head coach Jeremy May could barely contain his excitement for Powell, who PR’d in the race. “She’s kind of worked for this her entire high school career and now, as a senior, to get out and go to state, it’s super exciting.” May also showed optimism for the future, hoping Powell’s state run could inspire the rest of the team for the future.

Mishawaka’s Paishence Johnson was spectacular. Johnson won the 100 and 200 by large margins while also assisting the 4x100 relay team to another gold. Teammate Rylin Begarus won the 100 hurdles, also by a large margin.

The IHSAA girls track and field state finals will be June 1 at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington.
