Wildcats Use Big Innings To Advance In Softball Sectional

CONVERSE – A three-run fourth inning staked Whitko to a 5-0 lead, and a four-run seventh inning put the game on ice for the Wildcats in their 9-1 win over Manchester in the opening round of the 2A Oak Hill softball sectional Tuesday.

Emalee Duggins had a double among her three hits, and she scored three times. Augusta Garr doubled, singled, drove in two runs and scored once. Shi Bradley had a pair of singles and scored a run, and Kaycee Sims drove in three runs for Whitko.

Ellie Snep was very solid in the pitcher’s circle, tossing a complete game and allowing five hits and no walks while striking out seven.

Manchester scored its lone run when Andrea Kahn’s double brought home Mackenzie Day. Kindra Stetzel singled twice for the Squires, who finished their season with a 8-15 record.

Whitko (13-7) takes on Rochester in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. today. Wabash and Oak Hill face off in the second semifinal.

Manchester Falls At Culver Academies Regional; Warsaw Wins Late

CULVER – Manchester and Warsaw each had their girls tennis season end at the Culver Academies Regional Tuesday night. The tournament was moved indoors because of wet conditions on the academy campus.

Squire head coach Joel Eichenauer felt his team lost a competitive advantage Tuesday afternoon.

“My initial thoughts were hoping we could play outside. The weather conditions were not great, but it was dry. Many of our girls don’t grow up playing indoors, so that was a fairly new experience for us.”

Eichenauer added that of Manchester’s five losses this season (against 13 wins), two came to top-10 teams and the other three were matches played indoors.

The lone win for Manchester came at No. 2 singles, when Halle Briner overcame a first-set loss to win in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Briner trailed 5-0 in the opening set before a change in strategy helped her rally to make that set close, then go on to win the final two sets.

Eichenauer said he was pleased with his team working with what was in front of them, and not worrying about what can’t be controlled.

“We have honed our skills with what we can control, the finances we have to work with and the outdoor courts we have. We’ve learned to play the cold and wind to our advantage, block those factors and be mentally tough. But make no mistake, we lost to the better team tonight.”

“We had a heck of a season, with winning a fourth straight conference title and a fourth straight sectional. Those things have never been done at our school before. The girls should be proud tonight.

Warsaw 3, Culver Academies 2

Warsaw used a three-set win from junior Taylor Shoaf, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 over Culver Academies’ Anna Moreno to give the Tigers a 3-2 semifinal win late Tuesday.

Squires Wrap Up Regular Season With Win

NORTH MANCHESTER – Heritage scored a run in the top of the first, Manchester answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, and that was it for scoring in the Squires’ 2-1 win over the visiting Patriots Tuesday in the final regular-season game for both teams.

Grant Strobel, Kam Lester and Mason Meyer opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases for the Squires. Strobel then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mason Roberts to tie the game.

After a wild pitch sent Lester to third and Meyer to second, Lester scored on Thane Creager’s groundout on what turned out to be the game-winning play. Strobel and Lester wound up with two hits each.

Strobel was outstanding on the mound, tossing a complete game and allowing six hits while striking out 12 and walking none.

Manchester (13-7) drew a bye in the 2A Wabash Sectional, and will play Whitko (1-14) in a semifinal game around 3 p.m. Saturday, following the first semifinal game.
