The crash happened at about 9:56 a.m. Monday on West U.S. 30 near the intersection with North Parker Street, Warsaw, according to a Warsaw Police Department report.
Deputy Larry R. Holderman, 61, Warsaw, was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for serious injuries, the report states.
Monday evening, Sheriff Kyle Dukes said Holderman was taken to KCH because of head injuries. While at KCH, Holderman was given numerous tests, but released from the hospital at about 4:15 p.m.
Dukes said Holderman was complaining of back, neck and head pain and had a large cut to the head.
Jeffrey A. Shipe, 62, Waterloo, told police he was driving east on U.S. 30 – in a white 2019 International 400 commercial truck, registered to Midwest Step Saver Inc., Avilla – and approached the intersection of North Parker Street.
He told police he wasn’t paying attention to his surroundings, the WPD report states. When Shipe looked up, he didn’t have enough time to react before making contact with the rear of Holderman’s blue 2016 Ford Explorer police SUV.
Shipe was read the implied consent for the serious bodily injury crash. Once Shipe said he would voluntarily submit to the test, he was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for a voluntary blood draw. The results are pending. He didn’t report receiving any injuries in the crash.
Holderman later told officers he was slowing to a stop in traffic as he was approaching the intersection of North Parker Street and that he was driving east on U.S. 30. He then stated he remembered slowing down and then couldn’t recall anything but being in the back of the ambulance. He didn’t remember anything during the crash.
The driver of a third vehicle, Leonard H. Morris, 68, Goshen, said he was stopped in traffic on U.S. in his white 1994 Ford pickup truck and was waiting on the stoplight at the intersection when he was hit from behind by Holderman’s police SUV.
Morris did not report suffering any injuries. KCSO Fatal Alcohol Crash Team was notified and arrived on scene.
Damage was estimated at $10,000 to $25,000.
Video of the crash provided by the WPD is available on the Times-Union Facebook page.
