After a strong showing in many of the distance races, the Warsaw girls track team won their 13th sectional in a row by scoring 134.5 points at Tuesday’s IHSAA Sectional at Fisher Field on the Warsaw campus.

Second place Elkhart Memorial scored 84.5 points.

As they have in many events this season, the Lady Tigers got an early boost from their young 4x800 relay team. Freshmen Ava Knight and Wini Barnett, senior Ashlynn Hepler, and sophomore anchor Adree Beckham secured first place with a 9:47.97 finish. Second place Elkhart Central finished nearly twelve seconds behind the Tigers, with a time of 9:59.89.

Wawasee’s team of Bailey Mayhew, Nadia Palacios, Cameron Kryder, and McKenzie Smith finished third, coming in at 10:09.72.

All three relay teams earned top three finishes for the Tigers. The 4x400 meter relay team, made up of Maygan Bellamy, Ava Knight, and Remi and Adree Beckham ran a 4:04.21 in a runner-up effort. The 4x100 meter relay team came in third with a time of 51.10 as Brooklyn Fitzgerald, Bellamy, Kendra Love, and Jaslyn Brock earned their team points.

Many Warsaw athletes contributed to the win. Senior sprinter Makayla Clampitt won the 100 meter dash by clocking in at a clean 12.50. Senior hurdler Michaela Buriff put up a 48.76 in the 300 meter hurdles, good for a third place finish. Senior Remi Beckham added another bronze in the 800 meter run, finishing in 2:24.91.

Warsaw was boosted by clutch performances by their underclassmen. Sophomore Adree Beckham earned second place in the 1600 in a time of 5:16.63. Audrey Grimm’s fourth-place finish in the event earned Warsaw points as well. Barnett’s 11:34.51 gave her a second place finish in the 3200 meter run.

Warsaw earned a solid boost from its field competitors. Juniors Grayson Kilburn and Kennedy Lauck earned second and 3rd respectively in the high jump, with heights of 5’3 and 5’2. Caitlyn Kehler took gold in the pole vault and tied the school record by reaching 11-6 while Abby Steffensmeier came in third in the long jump, reaching 15-11.

As usual, the 400 meter run was one of the meet’s most competitive events. Wawasee’s Bailey Mayhew edged Warsaw’s Angie Sanchez-Vijil by 0.27 seconds to finish in third. Elkhart Memorial’s Lalia Nagy and Northridge’s Ella Hoefer took the top two spots.

Wawasee finished in eighth place, totalling 42 points. Most of their points came from field and throwing events. Senior Jada Parzygnot starred for the Warriors, winning the long jump with a length of 16-6. Parzygnot also finished second in the pole vault, reaching 11-2. Senior thrower Sara Pritchard earned silver at the discus with a 107-1 throw, edging out Warsaw’s Lynae Dawson by eight inches.

Next up for the top three finishers in each event, plus anyone who meets the standard to fill the field, is the regional meet, also at Fisher Field, Tuesday.
