Warsaw Bats Awaken Late In 16-6 Loss At Northridge
By Steve Krah-
The Tigers rapped all of seven hits from the fourth inning on, including three for extra bases Friday in a Northern Lakes Conference high school softball game at Northridge.
The host Raiders (15-6, 9-2 NLC) scored nine runs in the first inning on the way to a 16-6 win in six innings.
“We figured it out a little bit,” said Warsaw coach Kevin Dishman. “We stayed on top of the ball instead of being underneath it. We were popping up a lot.”
Junior Issabelle Dittmar was a leader both in the field and the plate for the Tigers (5-14, 3-9 NLC). At shortstop, she made a diving stop and force-out to retire Northridge in the bottom of the third inning.
In the top of the fourth, it was Dittmar that collected Warsaw’s first hit against Raiders senior Allison Hostetler.
“I always push her to drive the ball through somebody, not over somebody,” said Dishman of his offensive advice to Dittmar. “She got a good, nice level swing and the ball carries.”
After producing just two baserunners in the first three frames (senior Courtney Chookie and freshman Avery Sleeth were hit by pitches in the second and Chookie was thrown out at the plate trying to advance on a passed ball), the Tigers sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs with five hits.
Senior Carmen Albertson drew a lead-off walk and later crossed the plate on Dittmer’s double to right field. Dittmar’s two-bagger came off a 2-2 Hostetler pitch. Dittmer scored on junior Hudson Bolinger’s single to center.
The third run was made when senior Madison Lane lashed a single to plate Chookie, who walked.
Warsaw cut the gap to 11-4 when senior Hailey Locke’s single to left drove in Bolinger.
Warsaw left the bases loaded when Hostetler got an inning-ending strikeout.
After a two-run Raider fourth, Warsaw pulled to within 13-6 with two runs credited to Hostetler in the fifth.
Sophomore Lindsey Bradley and Dittmar clubbed back-to-back home runs.
Bradley turned on a 1-0 pitch and sent it over the center field fence. A 1-2 delivery was tomahawked over the left field barrier by Dittmar.
That’s when sophomore Jenifer Robinson relieved Hostetler in the circle for Northridge and racked up two strikeouts and a pop-up to end the Warsaw uprising.
By plating one run in the bottom of the fifth and two in the sixth, the Raiders won by the mercy rule.
The Tigers made just one fielding miscue and that came in the first as Northridge piled up seven of its 18 hits against senior Kennedy Tennant.
“We played pretty good defense,” said Dishman. “Northridge hits the ball. We realize that is a team we have to go through to win (the Warsaw) sectional. We will definitely log this in our book and prepare to face them in sectional.”
Northridge beat Warsaw 13-3 April 24 at the Tiger Athletic Complex.
Everyone in the Raider starting lineup Friday had at least one hit and scored at least one run.
Hostetler (4), sophomore Madison Wienert (3) and senior Sam Mathews (3) paced Northridge in hits. Robinson and senior Amber Bost drove in three runs each. Wienert tallied three runs.
“Yesterday we had a day with no games,” said Raiders coach Ray Caples. “With the rain-out schedule, that was very unusual. We could actually hit the (batting) cage. Our bats have actually been struggling over the last few games.”
Next up for the Tigers is the Warsaw Invitational today.
