Warsaw School Board Recognizes Two Maintenance Employees For Quick Action

Two Warsaw Community Schools maintenance staff members were recognized by the school board Monday night for acting quickly when they saw a house fire.

Director of Buildings and Grounds Jim LeMasters said Kevin Brown and Dave Craig are the school corporation’s employees who get up at 3 or 4 a.m. to take care of things such as salting sidewalks, clear parking lots and other stuff “that no one knows about.” Between Brown and Craig, they have 45 years at WCS in different jobs.

“Fortunately for one individual, these guys were working at that early hour,” LeMasters said before letting Craig tell the rest of the story.

“We were patching holes in the pavement and we had come from maintenance and we went by a house and there was smoke oozing out from under the roof. Well, it appeared to be a fire so we pulled up there and Kevin jumped out and we knocked on the windows and doors. We rang the doorbell. He finally woke up,” he said.

The man had three dogs and Craig and Brown helped get those in the van.

“It’s pretty much what it was. Just a quick thing,” Craig said.

According to a March 1 Times-Union story, at 4:02 a.m. that day the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory was called to 913 E. Smith St. after a fire started at the home in a breezeway. The fire then spread to the attic. One man was asleep when the fire started and two other family members were not home at the time. Damage was estimated at around $30,000.

WCS Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert said the house fire occurred nearly across from Lakeview Middle School.

“These two guys, again, noticed and it’s hard to tell what would have happened if they hadn’t done anything. When we talk about unsung heroes being out at 4, 5 a.m. in the morning, doing a job on behalf of Warsaw Community Schools, and then having that same simple consciousness to realize that’s going on, something’s not right, and step up and take care of it – in my book these guys are heroes at Warsaw Community Schools and we’re so thankful to have them,” Hoffert said.

Both received certificates of appreciation and board members shook their hands.
