Dukes Warns Of ‘Emergency’ Scam

Kosciusko County Sheriff Kyle P. Dukes said, on behalf of all law enforcement agencies in the county, there has recently been a resurgence in “emergency scams.”

In these situations, the perpetrators present themselves as authority figures, insisting that a family emergency has occurred. Family emergencies have been portrayed as arrests or hospitalization. The scammers may present leading questions to obtain victim information, or they may already have limited family details.

A variety of communication avenues are used to defraud the victims; including telephonic and electronic messaging. It may even appear that the calls are originated locally. Once the story is laid out, the suspects will seek financial aid. The monetary requests have been in the form of a wire transfer, online payment or gift cards. Individuals have been victimized by con artists, in these instances, for thousands of dollars. Once payment has been sent, tracking is nearly impossible.

If one of these calls is received, the Federal Trade Commission recommends the following:

• Resist the urge to act immediately, no matter how dramatic the story is.

• Verify the person’s identity by asking questions that a stranger couldn’t possibly answer.

• Call a phone number for your family member or friend that you know to be genuine.

• Check the story out with someone else in your family or circle of friends, even if you’ve been told to keep it a secret.

• Don’t wire money — or send a check or money order by overnight delivery or courier.

Victims of internet scams are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Wawasee Community Schools Kindergarten Round-Up Set For March 21

SYRACUSE – Wawasee Community School Corporation’s kindergarten oundup is March 21.

Milford, Syracuse, and North Webster schools will host a roundup in each of their buildings from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Parents and their child may come any time during that time frame.

Parents or guardians should bring the following items with you if you have them: parent’s and child’s Social Security numbers; child’s immunization records and birth certificate; doctor’s name, address and phone number; two names and phone numbers of people to reach in an emergency, and parent's workplace and phone numbers. In addition, you will be asked to complete a health questionnaire.

Patrons unsure of which school their child will attend, can go to http://bit.ly/2FfWy1K. Under the search area on the left hand side, type in your street address and zip code; then choose kindergarten as the grade level from the drop down, and then hit the blue search bar. You will then see the elementary school where your child should attend.

Those unable to attend kindergarten roundup or have specific questions, should call the elementary school their child will attend.  Staffing decisions are based upon the number of students enrolled.

The elementary school phone numbers are (all area code 574): Milford 658-9444; North Webster 834-7644; and Syracuse 457-4484.
