The Warsaw boys basketball team was 14 of 52 from the floor and lost the Class 4A Sectional 4 final 59-46 to Northridge at historic North Side Gym in Elkhart.
“They’re a good team, and we can’t shoot like that and have a chance to win,” said Warsaw coach?Doug Ogle.
The Raiders (18-8) began the game on a 7-0 run before Ogle called a timeout to shore up the Tigers.
Warsaw (15-8) responded with a 9-0 run on the strength of buckets by seniors Tyler Metzinger, Nolan Groninger and Trevor Rumple to finish the quarter.
It was the last time Warsaw led, as Camden Knepp nailed a three-pointer early in the second for a 10-9 lead.
Warsaw made just two field goals in the second quarter. The Tigers were down 19-11 when Blake Marsh hit a shot and followed that up with a trey to cut Northridge’s lead to three.
But, Jackson?Erekson, who finished with a game-high 25 points, scored to push the Raiders’ lead back up to five points.
“I told him, ‘This is your time, go and get it,’ and I thought he stepped up and played a lot better tonight at both ends of the floor for us,” said Northridge coach Scott Radeker, whose team extended its win streak to 12 games. “But, it was a total team effort.”
Warsaw’s shooting woes continued in the third quarter. The Tigers made just one field goal on a bucket by Luke Adamiec, while Northridge rained down baskets and led by as many as 16 at one point.
Warsaw never quit, and twice cut Northridge’s lead to nine points in the fourth quarter.
However, the Tigers’ shots did not click in succession, while the Raiders continued to score and play solid defense for the win.
The sectional title is Northridge’s first since 2015, and follows up back-to-back sectional finals losses in 2017 and 2018.
“I have a lot of appreciation for their players, their coaching staff, Coach Radeker, for the type of season that they’ve had,” Ogle said. “And, I wish them the best in the regional.”
A night after scoring a career-high 12 points, including the game-winner with just under three seconds remaining, Marsh led Warsaw with 18 points.
Ogle complimented seniors Groninger, Metzinger, Rumple and Jaylen Reese, as well as senior managers Jack Horoho and Connor Hughes.
“Our seniors are quality guys, and they led us to a championship season,” Ogle said. “We are Northern Lakes Conference champions, so they have a lot to be proud of and I appreciate those guys.”
