CONVERSE – The Manchester Squires were ever so close to winning their first boys basketball sectional title in nearly a quarter-century Saturday night.

In the championship game of Class 2A Sectional 37 at Oak Hill High School, the Squires were edged 63-60 by the Wabash Apaches, who celebrated a sectional championship for the first time since 1967.

Wabash, now 21-4 with its ninth straight win, led 16-13 after one quarter of play, 33-26 at halftime and 45-44 heading into the final frame.

The Squires, who finished the season with a 14-11 record and whose sectional drought goes back to 1995, were led by the 31 points, six rebounds and two assists of sophomore Weston Hamby.

Senior Kam Lester and sophomore Max Carter scored nine points each, while senior Brayden Casper finished with seven points.

Saturday’s one-possession game came after Wabash beat the Squires 67-51 on Jan. 11 in a regular season game in North Manchester.

Junior Trenton Daughtry led the Apaches with 30 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Jasper Walters and Blake Gribben chipped in with 10 and nine points, respectively, in the win.

Wabash will play Frankton in a regional semifinal game at Lapel High School Saturday. Covington and Alexandria will meet in the other semifinal.

All four teams in the Lapel Regional have at least 19 wins.

Trojans Fall To No. 7 Argos

BOURBON – The Triton Trojans never held a lead in Saturday’s Class 1A Sectional 51 title game, but were never out of contention, either.

In a 47-37 loss to No. 7 Argos, the host Trojans trailed 18-13 after one quarter of play, 24-16 at halftime and 34-27 heading into the final frame.

Triton’s downfall was its three-point shooting, as the Trojans were 12 of 26 from the field overall, but 6 of 15 from the arc.

Argos, on the other hand, was 15 of 24 from the field overall, 3 of 5 from three-point range, and converted 14 of 15 free throw attempts.

The Dragons, now 21-4 with their 10th straight win, won their first sectional title since beating Triton 64-61 in 2004.

Argos got all of its scoring from its starting five.

Sam Manikowski led the way with 16 points, Ian Kindig scored 11 points, Owen Nifong eight, Lukas VanDerWeele seven and Jonah Osborn five.

Triton was led by the trio of Jared Bules (12 points), Tye Orsund (11) and Beau Hepler (7).

The Trojans, who finished the season with a 10-15 record, also got three points from Ashton Oviedo, and two points from both Lucas Richman and Keegan Westafer.

Argos will play Covenant Christian in a regional semifinal Saturday at Triton High School. No. 1 Blackhawk Christian will meet Gary 21st Century in the other semifinal.
