Long Seeks Milford Council Seat

The first person who filed for the vacant seat on the Milford Town Council believes in civic duty.

Ken Long, 54, has lived in Milford for about 14-15 years. He works for a small business locally. In an interview Thursday, he said “not enough people get involved” and “it’s important that people get involved.”

Councilwoman JoEllen Free resigned from the Milford Town Council, effective May 31, because she was moving out of the county.

A Republican caucus has been scheduled to fill her seat at 7 p.m. June 18 at the Milford Town Hall, 121 S. Main St.

Long said this is the first time he’s ever ran for elected office.

“Some people approached me. After thinking about it, I decided to do it. I think it’s everyone’s duty to step up and do their civic duty,” he said.

Long talked to his wife about it and prayed about it. “Everyone understands that it was my decision” to make, he said.

In general, he said there were no particular issues facing Milford that he was particularly interested in.

“Milford is a nice little town. It’s a good little town. It would be nice for it to stay that way,” Long said. “A lot goes on to keep it that way. The town council does a lot to keep it that way.”

He said he’s been going to town council meetings regularly over the last couple of years.

If elected, Long said, “I’ll try to do a good job for the town.”

The deadline for filing With Kosciusko County Republican Centeral Committee Chairman Mike Ragan is 72 hours prior to caucus, or 7 p.m. June 15. Candidates for the council seat must be a resident of Milford, a Republican in good standing and not have a felony in their background.

Declarations of candidacy are available at the office of Kosciusko County Clerk of the Circuit Court, 121 N. Lake St., Warsaw, and must be filed with Ragan no later than 72 hours before the commencement of the caucus.

Eligible members of the caucus are the Republican Precinct Committeemen of Van Buren Township who have served continuously, from 30 days before the date of the caucus. There are three Van Buren Township Precinct committeemen serving Milford who will select Free’s replacement at the caucus. They are Stephen Tucker, Van Buren 1; John Beer, Van Buren 2; and Dr. Bruce Lamb, Van Buren 3.
