Tigers Edge Trojans For Last Spot At Boys Golf Sectional
June 1, 2019 at 1:17 a.m.
The postseason heightens drama, and the Warsaw boys golf sectional Friday at Rozella Ford didn’t lack for either the thrill of victory, or at least survival, or the agony of defeat.
The host Tigers finished third in the sectional, grabbing the last team spot for Thursday’s Plymouth Regional. They edged Triton by two shots for the last spot.
Three individuals who aren’t on an advancing team also get a spot in the regional competition. One went to Plymouth’s Michael Carmichael. The last two of those spots went to Triton’s Chase Butler at 74 (the same as Carmichael) and Manchester’s Harley Kruschwitz at 75. Tippecanoe Valley’s Cade Brouyette, the Three Rivers Conference tournament medalist, missed a playoff with Kruschwitz by a single shot.

“It was a nailbiter, that’s for sure,” said Warsaw coach Rich Haddad. “We felt like there were five teams worthy of moving on, and we just had to be in the top three. Our hope was that we’d find a way to be in the top three and we made it.
“But it was a tight finish. It was close.”
If Triton had moved on, the Tigers would have still been represented at the regional. But a low score from an unexpected source kept Warsaw’s season alive for another six days.
“Cal Hoskins, our No. 1 player, shot a 73. He didn’t hit it solid, but found a way to shoot a good score,” Haddad said.
“Really, hats off to Jack Yeager. He’s my five guy, and he shot his best round of the season at 78; that really picked us up.
“A couple of the other guys had tough days. We needed Jack; we didn’t know we needed him as bad as we did, but he really made the difference that helped us move on as a team.”
Triton coach Jack Carpenter was happy for Butler, but said there was disappointment in falling just short of advancing the entire team.
“It was a great season for our kids, which is a credit to our seniors, who have been with us for four years. This year we won four tournaments and were (Hoosier North Athletic) conference champions, which is always one of our goals,” Carpenter said.
“Obviously not getting out of the sectional is a disappointment, but we finished the season at 14-2 in our duals and three-ways, and had some very good rounds. So they’re not leaving empty handed. They’re leaving with some nice credentials. Beau is going on to play college golf, which is fantastic, and I appreciate that they’ve taken that next step.”
Manchester coach Pat Brandenburg said he had hoped Kruschwitz, a junior, could have been accompanied to the regional by his younger brother, Owen. The freshman missed at least a playoff for the third individual spot by two shots.
“Harley was a tad bit higher than what he wanted, but he dug in and got the score he needed to advance,” Brandenburg said. “Owen was a bit high today, but he’s a freshman playing in his first sectional. It’s a whole different thing playing in your first sectional, and he’ll be back.”
Still, the Squire coach wasn’t necessarily disappointed in his team’s overall performance. In fact, he was pleased with the improvement shown.
“Our score was pretty good for us,” he said. “We cut at least 13 shots off what we had at the conference tournament. Klayton Hendrix and Konrad Borgmann both had very good scores today, and that brought our team score down quite a bit.”
Wawasee was seventh with a team score of 343, 13 shots behind Manchester. Zach Leedy and Caden Welty led the Warriors, each shooting 85.
Warrior head coach Steve Coverstone said his team performed pretty much as expected.
“Caden did a really good job. He’s a freshman playing in his first sectional,” Coverstone said. “He shot 40-45, which is pretty good for a first time in a sectional. Tyler Bosstick had a 90, which I thought was a good effort from him.
“The kids all played hard, and gave it their best effort. we just didn’t have one of our better days. We’ll come back next year and do a better job.”
With four sophomores on the team, Whitko finished ninth in the sectional. Wildcat coach Mark Cmar said Friday’s experience will serve his team well in the 2020 season.
“We had some sectional nerves,” said Cmar. “We got in trouble mainly on the greens; they were a little fast, and they have some undulation that if you don’t stay below the hole you don’t do well.
“We’ve improved since last year, and we have four sophomores that will be back, and they are showing promise. I think, with work, we’ll be a lot better this time next year.”
Valley head coach Thadd Mellott said that despite the disappointment for Brouyette, the Vikings met their team goal.
“As a team we wanted to be under 400. We’d done that in our last few tournaments, so that’s a good goal for us at this point,”?Mellott said.
“Individually, we were hoping to get Cade out, but he missed it by one stroke, so there’s a little bit of disappointment there. But he played well. I feel really terrible for him, because he put in a lot of work.”
Culver Academies, led by medalist Michael Perea’s 1-over par 71, was the team sectional champion at 300. Columbia City finished second at 314.
The regional will be held at Pretty Lake Golf Club in Plymouth, with first tee scheduled for 8 a.m.
