Mary Kathryn Johnson, age 97, and a resident of Winona Lake, passed away quietly on Sunday, July 28, 2019, at 12:04 p.m. at Grace Village Retirement Community.

Mary was born on Feb. 15, 1922, in Huntington County, Ind. She was the only daughter of Fred and Belle Elder Ahlfeld. She was a 1940 graduate of Chester High School outside of North Manchester.

Mary was united in marriage to the Rev. Wayne R. Johnson on Aug. 29, 1941. Together, the two would share more than 69 years. To their union, four children and their families were born. Wayne preceded Mary in passing in September 2010.

Mary was a kind, caring person and a mother with unconditional love for her family. She was a longtime member of Claypool United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She had lived at Grace Village for the past 19 years and enjoyed the hymn sings, Bible study and fellowship she found there.

Those who survive with memories to cherish include her son, Jerry (wife, Lois) Johnson, of Claypool; daughters, Janet Lentz, of Mount Pleasant, N.C., and Barbara (husband, Mike) Wolfe, of Mesa, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Wayne, those who preceded her in passing include son, Stephen Johnson; two brothers, John Ahlfeld and Walter Ahlfeld; and son-in-law, Charles “Bud” Lentz.

A life celebration will be held at Titus Funeral Home, 2000 E. Sheridan St., Warsaw, on Thursday, Aug. 1, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Chaplain Bryan Benjamin of Grace Village will officiate Mary’s funeral service at 11 a.m. with burial to follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, North Manchester.
