LARWILL – Whitko Community Schools was actively seeking to fill four teaching positions, and now with resignations of both the principal and assistant principal for Whitko Jr./Sr. High School, they are focusing on the administrators openings as well.

The school board had accepted the resignation of Andrea Salmon at its meeting Monday. The following day, Principal John Snyder tendered his resignation. Snyder has accepted an assistant principal position at Wawasee schools.

Administrators still need to fill two special education, one business and one English position before the start of school on Aug. 8.

Whitko Superintendent Dr. Brandon Penrod said, “Whitko Community Schools would like to thank Mr. Snyder for the time he has spent here and the great things he has done.” He added, “On a personal note, having known Mr. Snyder for a number of years, I want to thank him for our time together and wish him nothing but the best in his new position.”

Penrod said on Wednesday they had already received some 40 applications for the assistant principal opening that already had been posted. He indicated that they have contacted those applicants to ask if any were interested in being considered for the principal position and have received a number of positive responses. The posting for principal was listed on the Department of Education employment openings website on Tuesday and  Whitko has already received three applications.

Penrod explained the next steps in the process of filling the administrator positions. He said, “We will send a ThoughtExchange to faculty/staff and parents/guardians asking for their ideas on what attributes they feel is most important in selecting new administrators.”

ThoughtExchange is a digital survey that allows participants to give their opinions anonymously. The method is intended to allow respondents to focus on an idea, influence free, rather than who shared it, according to the ThoughtExchange website. Those filling out the survey can use 300 characters to give their opinions, but are also free to add information additional times. According to Penrod, the information is then extended back to the schools in a ranked data form. The list can be made available  to everyone who participated in the survey.

Penrod said, “We will close it fairly quickly, however, given our timeline prior to the beginning of schools.”
