Lady Tigers In Tough Class 4A Sectional

The Warsaw Lady Tigers are primed to stand tall in Class 4A Sectional 4 at Northridge High School.

“It’s gonna be a tough test for us,” said Warsaw coach Lenny Krebs. “If you look at our sectional, by golly it’s a tough one. Probably one of the tougher sectionals in the state.”

Warsaw boasts a strong record, but will potentially face a potent Elkhart Central squad and the sectional-favorite Northridge.

The Lady Tigers wouldn’t meet the Lady Raiders until the sectional final, though, and Krebs is focused on one game at a time.

“We’re looking forward to that opportunity, but we’re definitely not looking past the first two games,” he said.

Warsaw opens the sectional Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Elkhart Memorial.

The Lady Tigers shot poorly in their Jan. 9 meeting with Memorial, but still pulled out a 37-26 victory.

“I don’t think we’re gonna shoot as poorly again as we did that first time,” Krebs said.

Still, Warsaw has contingencies in place if the shots aren’t falling from beyond the arc.

“This is still a team that loves the three-point line, and sometimes we have to be able to abandon that because we’re not shooting well,” Krebs said.

Those contingencies come in the form of junior Brielle Harrison and freshman Abby Sanner, who scored in double figures in Warsaw’s first game against Memorial.

“Abby Sanner is gonna be our main threat,” Krebs said. “She’s a tough matchup for anybody inside, and I think Brielle can (score inside).”

Freshman Kacilyn Krebs also is a high-post threat who can step out and shoot the three-pointer.

From beyond the arc, senior Maddie Ryman will be dangerous. She’ll also be key in pressuring Northridge, which Warsaw will do with caution.

“I think (the Crimson Chargers) can be pressured,” coach Krebs said. “We just have to be smart about how we do it because of their quickness.”

If the Lady Tigers beat Memorial, they’ll advance to play either Elkhart Central or Goshen. Elkhart Central is the strong favorite, and coach Krebs respects their standing as contenders.

Meanwhile, Northridge will face Plymouth for the right to play Concord, which has a bye. The winner of that matchup would play in the title game.

With the Lady Raiders being the heavy favorite, Krebs is aware of their capabilities. Warsaw lost 44-37 to Northridge  on Jan. 5 in Middlebury.

The Lady Tigers were new to being without Kaylee Patton, who is out for the year with a knee injury.

“The first time we played, (Northridge) took advantage of (us) not playing with Kaylee Patton,” Krebs said.

Kacilyn Krebs has filled the gap, and Kendall Wayne also has stepped up.

“Kendall Wayne just continues to grow up every day, and she just keeps getting better,” Krebs said.

Another key point coach Krebs is emphasizing is enjoyment.

“We’re never gonna have the same dynamics ever again,” he said. “Once our seniors graduate, the whole dynamic of this team is gonna change. We just want to be able to continue to enjoy each other and enjoy the journey that we’re on as we go through the sectional.”

Indeed, the Lady Tigers are highly anticipating the challenge.

“It’s gonna be a slug-fest,” Krebs said. “But, (it’s) one we’re looking forward to.”
