The visiting Lady Tigers used a dominant second quarter to lead 25-16 at halftime, but the Lady Panthers responded with an even bigger third quarter en route to a 46-42 win at The Pit.
Warsaw, which had won the last three meetings in the series with NorthWood, outscored the hosts 16-9 in the second stanza, holding the Lady Panthers to a 3-of-19 effort from the field over the first 16 minutes.
NorthWood, which not only snapped a three-game skid to the Lady Tigers but also a current three-game slide, outscored Warsaw 16-6 in the third quarter and 30-17 after the intermission.
The Lady Panthers were a sizzling 11 of 13 from the field in the second half, while Warsaw made 5 of 17 shot attempts over the final 16 minutes.
“You look at the final score, and you look at a four-point game. What we talked about before the game, if you look at the last couple games with NorthWood that I had coached ... a two-point game last year, and when I was at Goshen they were tight ballgames. I would imagine that’s true not just with my teams, but a lot of NLC schools and NorthWood,” second-year Warsaw coach Lenny Krebs said in a postgame radio interview.
“My emphasis is on the fact we have to make every possession the most important possession right now so they don’t become even more important down the stretch.
“I thought in the first half we did a pretty nice job of that. We absorbed some foul trouble and still built a nine-point lead. We had some kids step up and they did a nice job, and we went into halftime and we talked about that. We talked about how we were in great shape, that we withstood foul trouble and still built a lead, but I felt like there were times in the first half when we were just relying on some outside shots to fall. We had to make sure we were ready to handle some pressure and do some things differently in the second half.
“I thought we came out in the second half and we didn’t really put the emphasis on every single possession and we let that lead slip away by not playing with urgency early. We probably visited Dorothy, we probably found Tin Man and the scarecrow while we were there, because we were out there somewhere, and you could see it in our eyes. We keep telling these girls intensity doesn’t have anything to do with how hard you run up and down the court ... intensity is a mindset, a focus, that I can look at you and see that you’re intense. And I thought we lost that for a little bit.”
Warsaw finished the game 6 of 22 from the three-point arc, while NorthWood was 0 of 6 from the arc in the first half and 5 of 5 after halftime.
Kate Rulli led the Lady Panthers with 14 points and eight rebounds, while teammates Mackenzie Bergman and Maddy Payne scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Maddie Ryman paced Warsaw with 17 points, scoring nine of the Lady Tigers’ 11 fourth-quarter points.
Abby Sanner scored six points for Warsaw, Halle Shipp and Brielle Harrison finished with five points each.
The Lady Tigers are now 13-8 overall and 4-2 in the NLC. Warsaw concludes the regular season Saturday with a home game against conference rival Goshen, a game that has been postponed three times because of the weather.
NorthWood improved to 16-7 and 4-3. The Lady Panthers drew a bye in Class 3A Sectional 21 and will be back in action on Feb. 1 in a semifinal game.
