Christina Szymanowski, 40, formerly of South Bend, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 12:36 a.m. Dec. 29 for theft. Her preliminary bond was set at $5,250. She has since been released on her own recognizance, and an initial hearing was set for 1 p.m. today.
Court documents filed Thursday list the charges against her as counterfeiting, a level 6 felony, and theft, a level 6 felony.
At about 8:20 p.m. Dec. 28, in Elkhart County, Indiana State Police trooper Arthur Smith saw a vehicle traveling without headlights on. He conducted a traffic stop and learned Corey Henderson was the driver and Szymanowski was the passenger. He smelled marijuana and saw marijuana in Henderson’s lap. There was a $50 bill and a $100 bill on the console. Szymanowski took the money from the console.
Smith had Henderson and Szymanowski get out of the vehicle and separated them. Henderson told him he had been smoking marijuana earlier in the day.
The vehicle was searched and officers found multiple items that appeared to be stolen. It was determined the items came from a Meijer store.
Also found in the vehicle was a clear plastic bag containing marijuana. Henderson said it was synthetic marijuana, and he was taken to the Elkhart County?Jail, where he was booked on a charge of possession of a synthetic drug or synthetic drug look-alike substance.
Szymanowski provided ISP trooper Jon Price with the $50 and $100 bills that were on the vehicle’s console. They were determined to be counterfeit, and Smith took her to the KCJ to be booked on theft.
While he was taking her to KCJ, Szymanowski said the clothing items in the back of the vehicle were stolen from the Meijer store in Warsaw. She said Henderson drove her to Meijer and she went in and stole the items.
At the jail, she said Henderson had given her more money and it was in her purse. She provided three $100 bills, which also were counterfeit.
The stolen merchandise was returned to Meijer on Dec. 29. The clothing was found to be valued at $949.87.
