Kristoffer Michael Brady, 38, of 13145 N. Eastshore Drive, Syracuse, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 8:34 p.m. Jan. 7 for strangulation and domestic battery. It was a day after he was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Brady taught physical education at the Syracuse school and was put on administrative leave pending the development of the case.
At about 6:33 p.m. Jan. 7, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a woman stating that she was thrown from a residence by her neck by a man. It was further stated that she did not know the address where the incident occurred, but was waiting for police to arrive at the intersection of Pickwick Drive and Eastshore Drive in Syracuse.
Court documents state the victim told sheriff’s deputy Kreg Kuhn that she and Brady are separated but legally married. (She has since filed for divorce). Due to the separation, Brady has been renting a residence on North Eastshore Drive in Syracuse. Earlier in that evening, she said she arrived at Brady’s residence to retrieve their child so that the child could return home with her. During the custody exchange, the victim said she confronted Brady about having a relationship with another woman. Brady became “extremely agitated” and told the victim to leave.
Court documents state the victim said Brady grabbed both arms and pushed her into an interior wall. He then grabbed her neck with both of his hands and lifted her off the ground. She was then thrown from the residence.
Kuhn noticed the victim had marks around her neck, which she said were caused from the altercation.
The victim said the incident was similar to ones in the past, but she never reported them because she didn’t want to jeopardize his career.
Officers then went to Brady’s residence to speak to him about the incident. He told Kuhn they had argued that evening.
Brady told Kuhn the victim was “verbally out of line” while speaking to him. He said he asked her to leave, but she “barged back in.” She didn’t damage any property or force entry into the home, but became “very belligerent.”
Brady denied there was any physical contact between him and the victim during their argument. Then he said, “maybe a hand on the back, but there was no altercation.” He also said he was not aware of grabbing the victim around the arms. When Kuhn questioned his answers, Brady changed his answer to no and further stated he did not lay a hand on her.
The officer asked Brady if he had ever touched her throat in any way and he said “no, definitely not.”
After speaking with Brady, Kuhn spoke with the victim, who was sitting down from the property, again. He asked her if she had exited Brady’s house and then reentered it before the altercation. She said that she did take her child to the car and then went back to the house to continue their discussion about Brady being involved with another woman. She said she did this because Brady told her, “come back and let’s talk about it in a minute when you put (child’s name) in the car.”
Kuhn then went back to Brady and asked him if he told the victim to put the kid in the car and come back to continue the discussion. Brady said he told her that “if you want to talk to me, you need to talk to me without (the child) here.”
Kuhn then confronted Brady about the physical injuries the victim suffered and asked Brady if he had suffered any injuries. He told Kuhn he could check him for injuries, but he could not report any. Brady also said, “I can’t recall laying a hand on her at all” even though she “stepped up into me and became very belligerent.”
After speaking to everyone involved, Kuhn told Brady that he was going to be arrested.
