Men In Rehab Arrested After Theft Of Car

Two Southern men staying in the area for a drug addiction rehabilitation program were arrested Tuesday after one allegedly stole a vehicle because he was homesick.

Issac Adam Finchum, 23, Newport, Tenn., was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 1 a.m. Tuesday for theft, a level 6 felony, and operating a motor vehicle without ever obtaining a license, a Class C misdemeanor. His bond was set at $5,000 surety and $250 cash.

Thomas Dewayne Hope, 24, Gadsden, Ala., was booked at 12:58 a.m. Tuesday for theft, a level 6 felony. His bond was set at $5,000 surety and $250 cash.

On Monday, Warsaw Police Department  officer Ross Minear responded to a report of an auto theft. He found the vehicle on Detroit Street and conducted a traffic stop on it. He identified the driver as Finchum and the passenger as Hope.

Steven Rockey, WPD officer, spoke with the victim of the car theft. She said she started her vehicle to warm it up before closing her place of employment. She noticed two men looking at her. Finchum purchased a cigar, walked away and got into her car. She confronted Finchum as he drove away and picked Hope up, and they left the area. The victim said she didn’t give either man permission to take her vehicle.

Finchum admitted to Minear he had been in Warsaw since Jan. 10 as part of a rehabilitation program for drug addiction, according to court documents. He got homesick, and he and Hope, who is in the same facility, decided they would go home to Tennessee.

Finchum said he noticed the vehicle running, got into it and drove away, picking Hope up. He said neither he or Hope had a vehicle at the facility. Finchum also admitted he never held a driver’s license in any state, according to court documents.

While the two men were being booked into the jail, Hope told Finchum, “What a crazy night. You took that lady’s car and said to me, ‘Get in, get in, get in,’ so I jumped in and now we are in jail.”
