Bussard, Backus Lead Lady Vikings Over TRC Rival

AKRON – Sophie Bussard, Haley Backus and a big second quarter led the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings to a 78-48 win over Three Rivers Conference rival Peru Wednesday evening.

Bussard led the hosts with 18 points, Backus finished with 16, and Sidney Wagner chipped in with 11.

Valley trailed 16-14 after one quarter of play, but turned things around in the second quarter by outscoring the Lady Vikings 30-5.

Valley led 44-21 at halftime and 64-33 heading into the final frame.

The Lady Vikings improved to 13-5 overall and 5-1 in TRC play.

Northfield is 6-1 in the conference standings, while Manchester is 5-1.

The Lady Vikings, who conclude the regular season with a game against Manchester, are in action again tonight when they host Rochester.



Warsaw Wrestlers Rally To Beat Concord

DUNLAP – The Warsaw wrestling team battled its way to a thrilling come-from-behind victory against Concord on Wednesday night.

Trailing 27-19 with three matches to go, the Tigers picked up two pins and a down-to-the-wire decision to earn a 34-27 win.

Warsaw picked up important decision points in some tightly contested matches from Isaiah Owens, Jose Grimmett, Brandon Estepp, and Angel Mendez.

The Tigers also got important bonus points from Brock Hogenson with a major decision and Jose Martinez via forfeit, while Jayton Brock and Brock Hueber picked up pins.

Concord started the night out ahead 6-0 with a pin at 285.

A double forfeit at 106 and a Jose Martinez win by forfeit tied the score.

Warsaw was able to keep things close at 120, but Concord regained the lead at 9-6.

Isaiah Owens was the next Tiger to pick up a win. After taking the lead in the second period of his 126-pound match, he controlled the pace and extended his lead to win 9-4.

Brock Hogenson took control of the match early at 132 and continued to build. His 12-3 victory by major decision put Warsaw ahead 13-9.

Concord won by pin at 138 and 145 to go ahead 21-13.

At 152 pounds, Grimmett pulled off a 5-1 decision to close the gap and Estepp came from behind to pick up a tight 4-3 win.

Concord earned its final team points of the night with a pin at 170 to go ahead 27-19. From there it was all Warsaw.

Jayton Brock moved up to 182 and hammered down a second-period pinfall.

Mendez wrestled in a scramble of big bodies. A late takedown secured a 5-4 win and picked up three more team points to put the Tigers ahead 28-27.

In the final match of the night, Brock Hueber secured the team victory with a first-period pin.

The win puts the Tigers' final record at 13-8 and 4-3 in the NLC.

Warsaw will compete in the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament at Plymouth on Saturday.
