Leesburg Elementary second-graders reached out to Head Start Preschool and spent time reading one on one with preschool students who are learning to read. Treleen Cox's class was given the opportunity in December with Evan Overman's class and Barb Marose's class is looking forward to the same opportunity this year. Cox started this program last year to help some of her lower-level readers. Cox wanted her students who struggled reading out loud feel comfortable. Cox used to work with First Steps so she wanted to be a help to Head Start. After a conversation with a Head Start teacher an opportunity for an outside activity was created, and at the end of the 2017-18 school year, they paired up a second-grader with a preschooler. Cox said, “They had a great time helping and those who had siblings in Head Start were so excited to be the helpers.”
